I can't find this coin anywhere. Can someone help me identify it. It doesn't have the usual design on the back.

This coin would be considered PMD as the reverse has been altered and engraved upon. Google HOBO nickels and you can see a variety of examples for Buffalo nickels (I do not know much about Barber dimes). People consider these pieces artistic and collect such items. As far as a coin is concerned all the numismatic value has been lost and you could consider this coin cull and only get melt value out of it.

It's referred to as a "Love Token," and will probably carry a decent premium in the marketplace over a coin of similar grade. The buying demographic is small but dedicated.

with Dave. Normally these also are holed so you can wear them on a necklace. I think it carries a premium over a non altered dime, but it is a small one and buyers will be hard to find. If you are looking to sell it, I would consider ebay.

Also, several dimes with holes were strung to make a charm bracelet.
Usually, the initials are those of the 'special woman.'

Back then people had more time and talent than extra money for jewelry.
Now, if you could match the initials to a living person ...

Yes, the premium is small but these 'damaged' coins are appreciated.

That is what I was thinking too. It is called a love token. There are lots of examples. The reverse was engraved by someone, and some consider it a type of art and collect them much like the hobo nickels.

I'm not sure but I think the picture of the love token side is upside down. It appears to have been engraved for or by someone with the initials CHW (or some combination of those letters)

Love tokens were a big fad during the 1870's and 80's. So much so that the government did pass legislation forbidding the mutilation of the coinage, supposedly to prevent a coin shortage. That legislation was later repealed in the early 20th century.

It is upside down as the small opening of the C is on the wrong side.

Love tokens were engraved with initials, names, nicknames such as Papa, Mama, Brother, et cetera and pictorial scenes from coins of all denominations U.S. and foreign, though Half Dimes and dimes were the most popular (affordable) to be given to a loved one.

Gerry Fortin has a large selection on his web site and is the process of imaging and pricing a 350 piece love token collection he recently purchased.
