Very nice! I have huge respect for anyone who takes on the gold page. It is something that I will probably never have the chance to attempt.

I hope to one day own "a" gold coin, this is indeed impressive! I recently bought a Carson City dollar, which was only a dream for the longest time.

There is something about gold. I thought about just buying an American gold bullion coin the 50$ face value coin, but I am told that those who deal in such things usually sell them 10 at a time minimum. So how to I pay for them? Do I walk around with $15,000 plus in cash in my pocket? It said by some that at least 5% of your assets should be in gold. If you have $500,000 in your IRA or 401-K that would $25,000 in gold. That is a lot of an asset that pays no interest or dividends and is subject to fluctuations just like all other assets. Also you have to rent a safe deposit box for it. You can't leave it under the mattress. Little off topic but gold is something special and has seen empires rise and fall over it.

For future reference (very far off future :P) where would be the best and safest place for a newbie to buy their first gold coin? I checked on ebay for $1 Indian Head but there were so many and a lot of them seemed different from each other. And congrats on getting halfway with all that gold!

Kairu, the answer is to find an excellent, well-known dealer to purchase from if you want raw. If you're okay with certified, then still go with a well-known dealer, but you should be able to find one on ebay or at a coin show to suit your needs. The same buying rules apply to gold coins that apply for all coins. Be very careful, do your research and most of all - HAVE FUN! : )

I just filled my first port on the gold page. I bought a cleaned Liberty Head Half Eagle from APMEX. I like the fact that I can decide if I want to get a discount for a cleaned coin. I went with the half eagle because gold had dipped below $1200 and that seems to be the floor for half eagles. If gold drops further it doesn't seem half eagles will get any cheaper, but if gold rises above $1200, the price of half eagles goes up, too. The price for quarter eagles and dollars won't change much no matter what gold does (within reason, of course). My goal is to stash away $600 so that if gold ever drops below $1100 I can pick up an eagle. I'm not springing for a double unless gold drops below $1000. Edit: For some reason, there was a link created to APMEX's ebay listings above. If you go directly to their web site and pay by check the coins are much cheaper!
