I'm pretty bad about it.

When I find a penny or nickel in my pocket that appears to be a gem, I put it in a flip.

If I see a group of extremely low grade coins on ebay, selling for less than they're worth, I buy them.

I have accumulated about 200 coins in 11 months of collecting; of which, about 5-10% are what I would consider "filler".

Most of my filler coins were purchased when..... You guessed it, I was new to collecting. A lot of that stuff I'm pretty much stuck with because I made foolish or impulsive purchases. Another thing to consider is that filler to me might be a gem to the next guy and so on. I guess it's all in how you view your collection.

I'm assuming you mean 'less than face.'

No. I mean a little pile of random old coins for $10-$12.

I got pretty luck once.

If I remember right I paid about $16 for 11 coins.

A braided hair large cent with the date rubbed off.

An xf indian head.

A good flying eagle.

A good Three Cent Nickel.

1936 Buffalo nickel.

A dateless buffalo.

A couple good details V nickels.

A good details 2 cent piece.

Something else I can't remember..

And a 1961 nickel was also included. Not sure why.

Unfortunately too much since I've been collecting since middle school. Definitely was a quantity over quality collector back then. Bought a lot of lower end type coins (Large cents, Two Cents, Three Cents, flying eagles) in my teens that I wouldn't even consider now. I've got thousands of wheat & steel cents that I got in bulk lots at local auctions in large Rubbermaid tubs.

But since 2009 I've tried hard to be more precise in my collecting goals and only purchase nice coins that I'll enjoy for years to come.
