Does anyone know if there are any diagnostics that can help determine an 1885 or even an 1886 V nickel?

Looks like either a 2,3 or 8 in the photos.

How 'bout some vinegar restoration? Would that work? Yea/Nea?

I'm going to guess it's an 1883
Is the reverse worn smooth?

I'm assuming that the reverse has CENTS on it. To me it looks like an 1888.

Vinegar or any other restorative chemical would almost certainly reveal that last digit, but I'm hoping to avoid that.
Meadow: The reverse is almost smooth, but the word "Cents" is partially visible....

I'm going with it is either a "3" or a "5". (But I'm usually wrong!). If it was struck with a greased die on that 4th digit we may never know. But then again, it could be PMD.

My initial thought was 1882, but that's not possible. My guess is 1889, PMD has caused the tail of the 9 to appear 'flat' and the looped portion has been worn/flattened by PMD.

Darn. A "6" would have been better.
A "5" would have been awesome!
