Hi everyone,
It seems that some of us get our coins from banks. So I was just wondering:
Do you go to banks that you don't have an account with? I've tried doing that, and when I was asked if I had an account with them and I said no, they refused service.
So, if anyone else does go to other banks, how do you get the bank tellers to cooperate with you?

I don't go to other banks for anything and I have seen my bank ask the same question when asked for the new dollar coins because they said they only have them for their customers. I asked them why that was and they told me that they only ordered a small amount and wanted to make sure they had enough for their customers that may want them so if you don't have an account they just don't offer service to you

One of my banks got my business, and a couple of accounts, based on the fact that their tellers went out of their way to get me a safe deposit box, and save coins even though I was not then a customer. They also got more when another one of my banks merged with another one of my banks and I wanted to diversify.

I have gone to banks that I do not hold an account with. They've never asked me if I had an account. They just assumed I did. My mother banks with them but not me. I use my own bank to pick up coin and my mother's to drop stuff off mostly (I've done a few pick ups there but not many).

When asked, I just look them straight in the eye and say "Yes, yes I do have an account here" then they give me my rolls and I say, "thank you, thank you very much and have a nice day."

I have an account with one bank, and a mortgage with the other, although I was getting my coins from them long before the mortgage, and in fact, the mortgage part just worked out that way by coincidence. They just never asked me if I had an account. Now they actually save things for me, although they don't usually get many interesting coins as they are mostly business accounts and less personal accounts.

I go to other banks and have come to one conclusion. If I don't ask them to do too much, the tellers seem more than happy to help. However, if I want to return any rolls or make them ask other tellers for something, they frown and ask for my account number. Once this happens, the gig is up and I usually can't get anything else from them. One unfortunate side effect of this is that once I have been turned away by one teller, they always seem to recall me and refuse to help. None of this bothers me much since I got on my Barber dime kick.  |

Well, I work in Oakland Downtown and before getting my Jefferson dollar from BoA, I went to 10 different banks (within the 1 square mile area - BoA, WaMu, Wells Fargo, Union Bank, US Bank, various credit union banks) and asked for the roll.... none of them had any, but none asked me about my account either.... I didn't have any account with any of those bank, so I just went in, wait for my turn and then go straight to the teller and ask him/her if they have the new coin in roll.... they said no and that's it....
Well.... I do get my rolls of Jefferson from Bank of America, which is not my bank, and they didn't ask me for my account. The week before that, when I came to BoA, one of the representative said they don't have any rolls, but she can order a whole box (100 rolls) for me, if I wanted to...... I just said "I'll come back whenever u guys have the single roll).
When I came back to Bank of American latter for the Wyoming Quarter, one of the account representative (the one sitting at the table, not standing at the counter) came over to help (because the line was getting long) .... I asked her about the quarter roll and she said they don't have any but offered me her desk number and asked me to call her back next week. Well, I called her but they didn't have any so she told me to call her tomorrow.....

When the Jefferson dollars came out, I went to a different branch of my bank. I asked the teller if they have the Jefferson dollars. The teller asked if I had an account with their bank. I told them "yes I have an account". The teller then asked what my account number was. When I gave her my account number she immediately checked the computer to verify I actually had an account.
I couldn't believe I had to go through such a hassle in order to obtain a roll of Jefferson dollars.

I go to PNC and Commerce and get can get as many wrapped rollsas I ask for and neither is my bank. But I can only get the new State Quarters or president dollars at MY bank. |

I recently opened a free checking account with Wachovia just so I could get rolls without problems. A lot of banks in my area ask if you have an account and rather than get hassled I figure the $100 to open the free checking is just working capital. Also they have a deal (still on I think) that they will give you $25 if you keep the account open more than six months and the balance at $100 or higher (a free roll of $1 coins) |

I have had great luck with banks in our small little town, as well as banks in nearby larger cities.
Sometimes I'm asked if I have an account, and when I explain I'm a coin collector, they always seem happy to help and supply me with what I need.

How exactly do you explain that your a collector? You just say, "Oh, I'm a coin collector, and I just want a few rolls of Jefferson Dollars?" And they understand?
But yes I do agree that its sad that you have to go through so much just to get a roll of dollars such as giving the account number and everything.

only 1 bank in my area has not let me get roll of coins. I thing that they don't keep rolls for customer  I have not be back to that bank. |

Just with my experience with working in a bank as a teller, the reason that we ask if you have an account or not is for a couple of different reasons.
1 - Most of the time we get a limited supply of things people collect and we do need to serve our customers and make sure we can get them what they want. (With all of the dollar coins we have only been able to receive 4 rolls of each president, so since there is so few the customers deserve to get first grabs at them.
2 - In case something would happen with the exchange of money (if the teller would accidentally short you or give you too much, we would have no way to trace and have a paper trail where that money went to).
3 - At least at the bank I work at, I'm not sure how other banks handle this but, when ever we do a cash exchange with a person we have to enter in the account number into the system and run a full transaction. This transaction never effects or touches the account that has been given to us, but here again it is a form of a paper trail. The bank wants to know where all the money comes from and goes.
