This is quite a scarce coin but it becomes affordable if you are willing to accept a low grade piece. What grade would you assign to this one?

I'll give it FR 2.

WOW, rarely do you see gold that worn. Many times coins this worn would be melted. A coin in this condition is probably rarer than the same coin in EF. As far as a grade I'll say AG-3. The date still shows so I wouldn't grade it any lower than that.

So, people just walked around with this thing in their pocket like it was just another coin?

Beats the heck out of carrying 5 heavy silver dollars around.. You could have a good time on $5. back then..

During the Civil War Union soldiers got paid $13 a month! Back then $5 was a lot of money!

I'd go AG3 but just barely. It's close to a FR2 and actually looks like 2.5!

IMO, there's too much detail left on the reverse to be FR-2. I call it an AG-3

Tremendous lowball gold indeed. Believe my credentials as a lowball collector are well established ... so please ignore that experience as I have no knowledge of low grade gold coins. Your photos indicate to me G04 ... the strength of the legends, date, center shield and LIBERTY conspiring to improve this lovely example from the (so far AG03) consensus. No obvious evidence of surface issues based on your photos ... Lovely coin indeed. David
