Take a look at the doubling on this PL coin. It is present in the legends and the devices. My 1971 Silver Dollar is all doubled, bad year. Is it Flat Field, machine - type?, hub? Comments welcome. Coat of Arms, flowers, dates, legends. Doubled! Have some double vision ... Edited by SilverDon 10/21/2017 2:00 pm

Pretty common On this particular issue. I am quite sure it is just shift doubling and not a true double die.

Thanks Pacificoin, some shift of the planchet or die between strikes. Happened to a lot of Proof and Specimen strikes late 60's -70's I hear.

This PL Set has a real nice doubling. Note the tips of the sun.

chad, that's an interesting piece, the only way it could look like that is if it were double struck. could we have close ups of different parts of the coin and whole photos of each side? I think you may have something.

It's flat field doubling. The 1871 shows it very nicely.

MD. The keeper/lock that holds the die in place was loose and allowed movement. Curent thought (from error pubs) is that the movement took place as the die was in the process of lifting from the planchet and it creates kind of a "shadow" image offset from the initial strike of the die to the planchet and then slight shifting when the pressure of the press removed. My opinion only as "errors" are not my forte.

I am wondering of Chad's coin is hub (punch) doubled... that split on the sun's rays, that is definitely not Machine Doubling or flat field doubling - I have never seen that in a 1971 PL dollar before... Send me a PM - I may want to do some research into that one...

Thanks SilverDon , I have 4 of those in the mint boxes to check for the doubling.. Hope that you found a good error. Mine are all toned real nice and I do like the looks. I will get them out of storage and report back. I will go to my LCS as he has a good scope to check with.

Cheers garys64wildcat, I have another and it showed no doubling. I suspect that those without doubling may be the exceptions, the errors are so common. I have a silver one from '71 with nice toning.

I'm not sure if that is a DDR, looking at the TS. Maybe double-struck? Flat field doubling with crazy MD? Both? Well technically it IS struck twice because it's a PL.
