The second batch of photos looks like flat field doubling, possibly from being double struck? Oh to have a time machine and go back to the Royal Canadian Mint in the early 1970s...

I have this same coin with the same doubling. I wonder if we are seeing is a bit of an illusion with Machine Doubling, because the sun's rays are not just raised, they are outlined by a region of negative relief as well... I will take mine into work for better photos...

i have found one as well, the split rays are odd and the coin is riddled with MD but it is off the same die. the doubling in the flowers seals it as a DDR to me though.

Hi Don, This coin is the latest subject in the CN Journal's 'Canadian Spice' column. Both you, and CCF, were acknowledged for finding and reporting this variety. If you are not a member of the RCNA, let me know, and I'll send you a copy of the column. Great eyes, and keep up the hunt!! Roger

Just awesome Roger. I am thrilled. I did subscribe to the RCNA and received my first two issues of the CN Journal last month, read your Canadian Spice article on 1964 Cents in the Oct./Nov. 2015 edition with interest. Thanks very much for the credit in the upcoming article, I can't wait to read it, and frame it. Will keep my 20X loupe by my side at the ready, happy hunting and thanks once more. Woohoo!

Don't forget that when design elements are incused and show doubling, most of the time it is due to Mechanical Doubling. Thus, if I am seeing it correctly in images below, the doubling of the tips of the sun are incused in the shield of arms, so it is a die shift.
