Hi guys, I wanted to start this thread because I think this is a very unique and beautiful toned Morgan and in researching the cause of this patern I found it was most likely taped into a book. I found pics of only 3 others that were ugly at best and none were double sided... My question is about the toning, please leave your opinon about it, eye appeal etc. I know it's subjective let's get a consensus.... also, why did it get a grade and why is there no residue if it was tape, did pcgs think it was tape but it didn't matter?... mainly I want opinions on the coin, is it possibly the finest known tape / stripe toned morgan lol?... thanks guys

Who would tape a Morgan into a book?! Anyways, it does make a pretty good toning pattern...

If it was taped in a book, wouldn't the reverse be toned a solid color?

not sure if its toning but if the golden look in the deeper areas around the ears and stuff is old aged tape residue which it looks like I would be scared. either way that's one pretty coin, I can tell the reverse has some stellar toning that isn't showing well in the photos.

No that is golden toning, forgot to mention that. There is no residue anywhere only toning leaving a negative space design where the tape or whatever it was was for all those decades. And you are correct about the rev toning!

At least it provides proof that tape can prevent coins from toning. I would NOT use that method however.

boy that's pretty, glad to hear she's healthy with no residue. I doubt it was taped to a book...I think it was stuck on a piece of tape in a line with a couple other morgans, that would explain the 2 sided light area and the toning on both sides.

I doubt it has anything having to do with tape. First thought is that it was in some old paper envelope with a thick band around it (rubber or plastic band?).

Looks like tape to me - I actually just went through a Morgan album for a friend - lots of these, sadly in my opinion. Yes, the tape prevents the toning, no question about that.

Thanks for all the opinions on how, let's keep it going... but also thought on eye appeal; what do you all think who reads this thread?.. 1-10 on a beauty scale

I am not fond of that sort of toning, whatever caused it. It's too distracting.

That toning does not appeal to me.
I like the coin with uniform toning, or brilliant, with no toning. This stripped stuff doesn't work for me.

I like it because it's unusual... full rainbows are gorgeous and some in a league of their own but how often do u see a toner like this... yes, the other few I have seen are ugly and they dont hold a candle to this guy. But IMHO I like how unusual it is personally
