A friend of mine in the UK recently found this Bust Dollar in a box of European coins at an auction. I advised him to send it to PCGS or NGC but thought I would post here first to see if people think it's the real deal. I personally see no obvious issues but I am by no means an expert. The weight and dimensions check out properly. If he does submit it, what would be the best way? He's based in the United Kingdom and I doubt would trust anybody to submit the coin for him (that includes myself as we have never actually met in person). Thanks in advance! and the edge: Andrew Edited by pattiewhack 02/15/2015 12:28 pm

It's looking good to me. I can't say genuine or fake with any certainty as there are many high-quality fakes out there, but the diagnostics for those fakes are not there. Wait for other experts to chime in.
Congrats on your friend's find!

What is that under Liberty's chin?

It's a dent of some sort.

I like what I am seeing, it would be best for your friend and the coin if he sent it to a certificate n company that conserves coins as well since there's some green residue on it.

Some more images: I can't even bring myself to say what he paid... Let's just say Grant's face would have brought change...

I am not seeing anything out of the ordinary and the edge lettering looks good.

Certainly matches the B-31/BB-115 variety.

The only thing that looks odd to me is that the planchet appears out of round. Edge bumps?

that's just caused by the striking process, due to not being struck with a collar the denticles are un even and the coin can appear slightly out of round and varry slightly in size from coin to coin.

Looks like a VF+ original coin to my eye. I think someone made a REALLY lucky score on that one.

It appears genuine or is a good quality fake. I do not like the color or the cleaning however. If it is genuine it is worth far less than a problem-free VF example.

Quote: Let's just say Grant's face would have brought change... Am I interpreting this as he would receive change from paying with a $50.00 bill? Implying that your friend paid less than $50.00 dollars for it?

Quote: Implying that your friend paid less than $50.00 dollars for it? Correct. It was purchased in a tin of European coins offered as "various European Crowns" for about 50 dollars. The European coins were of similar vintage and all checked out as authentic.

Hi all! I've had a chance to see this coin in person and take better photos. Please see thread on the Classic Coins Grading Forum here: https://goccf.com/t/198529Thanks :)
