Okay, I got my phone camera to work at least for the short while to snap these pics before it displays an error message AGAIN I was looking for a better-struck 1970 dollar and was kinda disappointed by the PLs being not-so-well-struck either. I picked the best one but even this was still rather rough at the front petal. This coin is very shiny and not easy to photo, so forgive the quality of these pics. I was looking at the multi-struck coins thread and checked if this one has any flat field doubling. I see some on the reverse but there's something more interesting going on with the A in the obverse. I'll leave the (rather blurry) surroundings in in case someone can pull any clues from it. I see doubling on most of the letter tips of DG REGINA but my phone absolutely refuses to cooperate (I might try throwing it or something one day). I'll just make an illustration, doubling in blue: The "E" and the lower curve of "R" is totally messed up, I don't know which "line" is which. I'm just guessing here. The "I" in Regina looks distorted taking this kind of shape but doesn't have a doubled appearance: As far as I know it doesn't look like flat field doubling. It's one-directional but it's not flat, so it's not MD. But it can't be a doubled die either because I've never heard of such a thing on these, and Google gives nothing. I can't provide any additional pics for the moment. Did anyone ever find anything like this before, or my eyes are going doubling-crazy? Should I get it sent somewhere to find out? I edited to change title. Edited by Altaira 02/17/2015 1:13 pm

I have never really examined the legends that closely, but the splitting of the tip of the A does suggest a doubled (hub or punch doubled die). If you want, I can take some good photographs for you, and send the coin back to you. Fire me a PM, this may be something I want to write about....

PM sent SPP.
Good catch on the oblong dot pennyman. I thought it was just shadow when I looked at the photos. I just checked and it is slightly oblong.
I haven't heard of a nickel dollar (PL) doubled die, hence my initial skepticism. Does anyone know when this series switched to single-squeeze hubbing?

I'm feeling pretty jittery now that this is in the mail... I'm hoping it won't take long to reach Ottawa!

The next few days will go real slow LOL
I never expected "checking for flat field doubling on a coin I had for two days" to become "discovering a possible doubled die" in less than 24 hours. This is crazy. My insane dumb luck strikes again.
Now, if I can find a way to actually troubleshoot my phone...

nothing like dumb luck, I love the thrill of finding new stuff. like when I was 7 I made my first discovery when I found a 1946 dollar with a DDR and DDO so I can just imagine your feeling of luck and excitement I have a feeling your name will be in Charlton by the next nickel dollar section. it looks like we will all have to start looking for the new DD.

Question, do business strikes and PLs share the same hub? I can't see any notching on both my business strikes.

yes they share a hub, you cant see notching in your business strikes because they were struck using properly done dies apposed to your PL coin which was struck with an obv. die that was hubbed, rotated and then hubbed again.

So it's not a doubled hub for this year. I've read about making dies at Wexler's site but I haven't gone into the doubled die classes yet.
AARGH it's not even 4 PM yet!

Your photos are a bit dark with some glare but that's the tricky part on non-business strike coins, too shiny that it's hard to photo.
I can't tell if it's the same A or not, but can you take a photo of the top left part of N for me? It would be cool if there is someone else who got the same doubled die without knowing it was ever there in the first place.

This is where the coin SlurExe97 is sending me will end up for photography... Normally, I am photographing mineral grains the size of a small sand grain (0.25 mm)... I will examine my own nickel dollars tonight... Both PL and SP strikes...

That will definitely do better than holding a 10x loupe to a camera lens. The close-up pics I posted are actual size, no image optimizer.
Tell us if you find a similar one SPP.
