Hey All! A friend of mine here in the UK recently found this Bust Dollar in a group of European Crown-sized coins he bought at auction. I've posted it to the US coin discussion and the consensus is that she's the real deal:

https://goccf.com/t/198234

I've now had a chance to hold this coin in person and take better quality images, and I'm also certain this is an authentic 1798 Bust Dollar matching the B-31/BB-115 variety.

I took these pics today, I'm hoping they can give you a more accurate representation of the coin's condition.

I apologize if some of the images are a bit blurry as my hands are still shaking. Photos taken in natural sunlight coming in from a window on the left, which is why there is a curved rainbow of light on the left hand side of the coin sometimes. There is a dent under Liberty's chin and one to the right of the Eagle's head as well. What looks like hairline scratches on the Eagle's chest I'm certain are scuffs from sitting in a box with dirt/dust and other coins, as they do not appear consistent with a rubbing motion, and appear only here. As usual, the images do not do her justice and I'll try to take more later when I'm not so shaky.

Please, grade away.

Please keep in mind these images are ultra zoomed and most of the little imperfections you see are not visible to the naked eye.

My guess would be XF-40,but with the hit under the chin. That was one heck of a score for the purchase price!

It is a great looking coin. Is the obverse gouge enough to merit details grade? I don't know.

Great coin and story, amazing score for your friend. Excellent photos as well.

I agree with EF-45 detail. The softness on the reverse is certainly strike-related and I assume that is a common feature for this variety. The two digs would probably result in a "damage" notation if the coin were certified but nevertheless I'd get it slabbed to verify authenticity. Your friend (or future owner) could always crack it out and retain the slab insert as evidence the coin is genuine.

Two thumbs up!

Well the latest news is that we've agreed on a fair price and the coin is now mine! It's been a dream of mine to own a pre-1804 Dollar since I was a kid so I am over the moon!

I will be sending this coin to either PCGS or NGC. Does there tend to be a preference for early American coins?

I'd go with PCGS as a first choice; they have a better rep particularly when it comes to getting the best sale price. You should be able to find an authorized dealer in the UK who will submit it on your behalf.

Congrats on a fine addition to your collection!

PCGS. Even in a PCGS Details slab that's a $2000+ coin.

That is an amazing find and looks genuine in the new images. The detail is close to XF. My guess is a Details grade for damage but regardless your new pics show a valuable coin that needs a top TPG holder to achieve full market value.

Thanks all, I've contacted Baldwin's in London about submitting the coin to PCGS through them. They are an authorized PCGS dealer and I've done business with them in the past so it shouldn't be a problem. Fingers crossed for a number grade but not holding my breath. Either way, I'm over the moon to have this coin in my collection. Thanks all for the advice and well wishes!
