Here's the latest info that I have seen:

Although the statehood program is, by legislation, intended to include only the 50 states, legislation has been introduced five times in the United States Congress to extend the program an additional year to include the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. territories of Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa. During the 106th, 107th, 108th, 109th, and 110th Congresses, these bills had passed through the House of Representatives, and even had 34 Senate sponsors for the Senate bill during the 108th; however, none of these bills were passed by the Senate. H.R. 3885,the version in the 109th Congress, passed the House by voice vote in the early hours of December 9, 2006, just before it adjourned sine die; but the Senate adjourned sine die shortly thereafter without considering the bill. The 110th Congress version of the bill, H.R. 392,was introduced on January 10, 2007 by the Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuno and was passed by the House of Representatives on January 23, 2007 where it awaits a Senate vote

Since the senate rarely does anything that isn't in their best interest, I expect this bill to die like all the others.

Spider,

Yeah, they're too busy trying to decide if their offices in the Senate Building should be painted off-white, eggshell, ecru, or cream.

I believe they actually decided on beige but they are in a public comment period for the proposed rules on what constitutes beige.

Since the State Quarters are going over so big with collectors and the Mint is making a bundle of money, they will probably expand this system further. They were going to include some Mexico provinces due to the overwhelming popularity of their people here. How about part of Canada so when they win another world series, we can say just another US State. Porto Rico surely has to have a Quarter. And soon enough there has to be a China State Quarter since almost everything is made there we may as well anex them.

Carl, you also forgot the State flowers, State animal, State highway system, State lakes, and the State Quarters on the state of the State Quarters.

Guam, Porto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands are U.S. territory and each have a representive in the House (non-voting). I think they should get a quarter. They've all been part of the U.S. for about 100 years or more.

Are they states? No? Well when they vote to apply for Statehood and are admitted as states then we can talk about getting State Quarters for them. Now on the other hand if you want to try to do Territories half dollars that's fine, Or if you really insist that they should be quarters I can accept that too, as long as there is break between the two series and a difference in the design so as to make it clear that there is a difference between the Sate and the Territory series.

I agree with Conder101. I think that they can all be part of our Military. I'm not positive about the Virgin Islands but I know when I was in active duty we had Porto Ricans that almost outnumbered us. I think if you want a State Quarter for them you can get them from Mr Barry Goldwater JR fact he will sale you all you want. I for one am ready for it to end and we can get back to coin collecting like it should be. but we all know that when this fiasco is over they will bring a new one in it's place.

OK, so not "state" quarters but do a coin for the territories too.

"i for one am ready for it to end and we can get back to coin collecting like it should be." Sorry, but I LIKE collecting current circulating coins. I can't afford to go to the coin show and pay a few hundred dollars for a coin or two. looking thru the change I get at the store is exciting, an adventure every trip. And the quarters just add variety.

This bill should die a quiet death so that we can move on and end this stupid debate already.

Truer words were seldom said.
