I think this is either a struck through or a lamination of some sort. if you look along the line, on the face you will see two different tones. Also if it is post damage, why is the curved line jagged and has a ridge. another clue, the coin has a curve on reverse where the line is. opinions welcome, expertise welcome...I need some education. *** Edited by Staff to clarify topic title. Is the coin bent? It looks like it in the last image. The coin looks partly cleaned.

Hi Coop, The coin has not been cleaned, it came in a box of pennies from bank. There is a dent where the line is, and different thickness in rim.

It does look darker in and around the devices and lighter in the flat fields I think that's why coop says it was cleaned-may have been before u got it

I'm not sure what happened to it. With the pictures being small makes it hard to see. I agree that the coin looks like some cleaning or something may have been done to it causing the lighter field.

Cleaning of the 19th century coins happened a lot. At one time they cleaned all the coins they collected. The dark area might be a stain or an attempt to remove the blackness that we see on the reverse.

looking at the reverse with a loupe, it just looks worn from being very old and circulated.

My opinion as a construction guy is that the coin was used as a spacer between objects and that will explain the ridge the bent and the difference in toning
