But I got one. Size/Weight 19mm 2.23g Date 267-268 AD Mint Milan T in ex IMP POSTVMVS ? Radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right VIRTVS EQVIT Virtus advancing right, holding spear and shield Refs RIC V 388; Mairat 224-5; AGK 111b; RSC 441 Rarity Scarce Green stuff on the reverse is stable and there appears to be silvering under the dirt. Rebel in Milan. Coins of Aureolus can be distinguished from others of Postumus by having mint letters in the exergue. A much superior example to most with good flan and portrait. Aureolus was a general of Gallienus, who commanded the new cavalry corps. He allied himself with the Gallo-Roman emperor Postumus, issuing antoninianii from the city of Milan, though Postumus never conquered the region. His coins often have compact die engraving, reverses noting Calvary, and are on thick, short flans that those of Postumus from mints in Gaul. He was executed under Claudius II.

Yes I thinks so. The commander of the Dacian's shouted (paraphrasing here) "Oi, look at this, Aureolus is leaving the city." Gallienus ran out of the tent to see (bodyguard left behind) and the commander of the Dacians stabbed him.

A fair example. Aureolus is a good one to spot in lots - the bust is easily distinguishable (the milan celators havingn to cut dies in the gallic style whilst trained in the roman). I have seen quite a few Aureoli with this hoard encrustation.
Aureolus didnt initially mint any coins - it was only when he knew the Romans were coming that he started pumping them out - a plea for help to the powerful gallic emperor that was never answered.

He will probably go for a bit of a soak at some point.

Wow!, now that's a nice find. You don't see many on these. A good long soaking and it should clean up nicely.

Thanks guys. I am pretty sure that I came across him when reading about Gallienus when I first started collecting, but the name didn't stick at the time. I have a soft spot for these fleeting emperors/usurpers......

Aureolus looks like a pretty tough guy. Very nice acquisition.
