I was so tempting to buy one of Prethen 3CN but I can't afford the whole set. I was walking around in the show and I came across one dealer table. Him and his finance were eating.... I saw some 3CN pieces in a tray that say $20 each - any coin of your choice. There were a whole bunch of other coins but I eyes were set on those 3CN. There were about 10-15 3CN, they are all common dates; most are worn and fall in the range of VG to VF.

I checked my Red Book for the grading criteria and price range. At first, I was thinking of only getting one 3CN.

But then I found another piece of 3CN. Both of them looked so good that I can't decided to choose which one..... I ended up with both of them.....

What do you guys think? What would the grade be? I thought they may qualify for EF grade, but I am not so sure....

PS: I have a cheap as second hand multipurpose laser printer/copier/scanner that I bought on craigslist for $60 so those scans are not as crispy as I would have wanted.

Nice couple of coins! I love 3CN and would pay the 20.00 just to get more even if I already had the dates. I would feel o.k. giving them a VF grade. The hair details on the obverse leaves a bit to be desired but the reverses look nice. In particular, the reverse on the second coin looks to have complete III's with really nice leaf details.

I would go F-12 on the first and VF-20 on the second. Good buys!

You did very well. In fact, I would have bought those two pieces for what you paid. The first is easily a nice VF+ and the second is a nice XF. Congratulations! It looks like you've been reading up on all those 3CN posts. Many dealers don't have a clue how to properly grade these coins and you basically ripped the dealer. Good job!

I'd say VF on the 1866 if that's not a vertical scratch in front of the ear. Looks like a couple nice die cracks on the reverse. The 1867 looks like an XF to me. There is some hair definition missing that looks like a strike issue, especially when you consider the reverse.

I believe you did very well indeed. Congratulations. Prethen is the expert, and I can't find fault with his grading.
