Poll Question
Coins have perceived growth, downward, or value retention.
The poll question is, how much of a factor does this have in your buying decision? Does it bother you if they go down, or do you get happy when they go up?
Or are you purely about hobby and can care less?
Apply this next sentence to your decision making when buying higher end coins. Define higher end as being a major purchase (to you).
"To me the future value of my coin is...."

I voted somewhat important because I really don't care if my coins go up or down in value, but If they do go up that just makes my collection even better

I've never sold a coin so I'm definitely not an investor. I do tend to buy higher end coins with the idea that it will rise in value but if I really want it I'll buy it regardless.

Somewhat important.
I also have never sold a coin.
I'd like to see my collection appreciate over time, in the long term, I'm not concerned about short term.
I think more and more folks are getting interested in coins, more collectors, more demand, higher prices. Good news.
If we see a dip in gold, I'm going to scoop up plenty of the classic US double eagles, eagles, and fractionals.

Would not matter as I enjoy collecting.
If I need extra funds when I retire then I may have to sell some of my collection. You can only get what the market is paying at the time it does not matter if the value is up or down.
Enjoy them today.

I voted for somewhat important.
When I'm selling the price can determine when I sell a coin. Sometimes I can sell it right away, at other times I have to wait. Either way, I'm not loosing any sleep on it.
If a coin is too high, I either collect something else or buy a lower grade.

I voted somewhat. I know that when I buy a coin, that in 20 years from now it's going to be worth more than what I paid for it. Plus it's different from comic books because if there's no demand for it, they're just old paper. With coins you always have the face value and precious metal value.

I voted somewhat Important , Incremental increases in some of my coins is nice but seldom the most important factor in my purchases for my collection .
Now I have been known to buy certian coins for resale these I do not count as part of my collection but they do finance other coins which are part of my collection .

It does matter to me but there is not much of my collection that will fluctuate with the market. My collection boils down to be worth about 1$ per coin and that's the way I likes it

I voted very important but only for the reason that if I need to sale fast (I'm talking about a family emergency) then I will be able to get the money sooner if it is a high end key or in that area and I had to sale I would drop the price to just a bit lower than market and be able to get the cash fast. don't get me wrong I do buy and sale a lot of a coins and most of the time maybe 99% I get a profit from it. but I do have my sets that will only come out of the safe for my eyes only and them are the coins I'm talking about for fast cash. I just hope it is my Son that gets to sale them Gary

I voted somewhat important, I don't collect as an investment but for the enjoyment. However if I ever decide to sell my collection I would like to make some money rather than lose.

Somewhat here as well. I hope they go up in value, but it is not something I spend time trying to figure out. Heck, I'll even overpay somewhat for something that I really need and have had a hard time finding.

I vote "not at all". I consider the value of purchases but most of what I collect will not see a significant increase in my life time so I just collect.

I voted important because as I have said before this is not only a hobby for me but is also an investment. I enjoy completing sets and finding upgrades and buying key dates. That is what makes it a fun hobby for me. It also keeps my money out of trouble. I could waste my hard earned cash in a lot of ways but if I look at my expenditures as an investment in my hobby and in the future value of my collection I can justify every dollar spent as much as I can the ones that I put in my 401K. I will use my 401K when I retire and should have some left for my children. My collection though, will hopefully be passed to them. My son is interested in coins so I hope he will at least keep some of the collection but it would be nice if the rest of the collection could be sold to provide something for them. This also can be a fall-back plan for me in case something were to happen and I needed to liquidate. So I voted important because I can't say very important but it is more than just somewhat important since I do try to research and make smart decisions before purchasing.
Thanks,
Jim

Usually when I buy now, it's with an eye towards value. Occasionally, I'll buy something just because I want it, doesn't cost a huge amount, and it's something I'll keep in the house to show off. With those items, I just want to be sure I'm not getting ripped and hope that I won't take a major loss on it when I sell it one day.

I collect to collect. I am not concerned with value, as most of my coins have very little value. It's all about the thrill of what you find in a box of nickels, or admiring the beauty of a foreign coin design. I can't bear the thought of parting with my coins, so I wouldn't be able to realize any rise in value anyway. That, and I'm terribly afraid of making a bad decision and losing money.
