The following is an article excerpt from CoinweekOkay, so you collect pedigree coins and have a fairly nice assortment. Well, I might be going out on a limb here but I'm pretty sure you don't have this one: This 1923-S Peace dollar accompanied Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo 11 flight to the moon. Normally, a 1923-S Peace dollar in this condition is worth melt, but with this kind of provenance it brought $31,070 in a Heritage coin auction in 2007. The Heritage auction description read: Read the Entire Article

Interesting article. This Peace will continue to sell at a higher price. IMO

To be really valuable it would have been better to leave it on the surface of the Moon.

Talk about "MOON MONEY" for a coin! Shows how important provenance can be when it comes to collectibles.

I think it would be ridiculously cool to own a coin that went to the moon. Just saying. Quote: To be really valuable it would have been better to leave it on the surface of the Moon. Like that Lincoln Cent on Mars.

perhaps they put the 1909 cent on the mars rover to lour Martian coin collectors and prove once and for all that we as collectors are not alone.

Why didn't NGC give it a grade?

Quote: Why didn't NGC give it a grade? No room left on the label, plain & simple. Not that it matters for this provenance. This coin is worth as much as any other Peace dollar extant. I wonder if it might be making an auction appearance soon?

Once again someone is over paying for a label.

In this case, I disagree. That coin went to the moon. THE MOON! You are paying for that, not the label. It is still possible they are overpaying, but it would still be cool to own.

Quote: That coin went to the moon. THE MOON! You are paying for that, not the label. The holder is only telling us about the coin. The thing that will never change, not matter if the letter or holder is lost, is that the coin has been to the moon! The holder and letter only qualify it and tell other people who are skeptical this fact. This is a great coin. I would want...it if it wasn't so expensive

It is still a 1923-S Peace dollar and so what that it may have gone to the moon. Does he have proof other than he said he had it with him? No. Now you will have other astronauts claiming they took this or that coin to the moon in their pocket and how are you going to know for sure they did or didn't? You won't.

Now if only Buzz had scratched his initials into it with a moon pebble while on the moon.. Hmmmm (of course the pebble would have to somehow be encapsulated with the coin to prevent conspiracy theories).. (..and of course documented NASA video of the process)..
Also shouldn't there be capital gains tax on this?

Quote: Does he have proof other than he said he had it with him? The contents had to be reported and documented for safety reasons, so there is a paper trail that verifies the claim and I am quite certain he carried a Peace dollar to the moon. Now, whether or not he still has it and gave NGC a common one from ebay will require further sleuthing.
