How difficult is it to collect Peace dollars? I am thinking if I ever finish my Liberty Half Dollars the Peace dollar would be a nice one to collect since they only cover a little more than 15 years. The nickels, dimes and quarters of early 20th century seem to have gotten a lot of wear. Even in the 1950's it was hard to find a good Buffalo nickel or Mercury dime in the wild. The liberty Standing quarters were also beat up badly. Any opinions?

If memory serves, the Peace dollar is relatively common (and cheap) in lower grades, and higher grades won't set you back more than a couple hundred per coin. With the exception of the 1928 and 1934-S which cost way more than a couple hundred at MS-60.

You need to look up recent auction results as this statement is no longer true.

Depending on the grade average of the set the Peace dollars could be relatively easy to accomplish.

Which type of Liberty half dollar set are you working on,

the Liberty Head half dollar
Peace-Dollar

or the Liberty Walking half dollar

Peace-Dollar

You did not specify which.

I liked the Peace dollar issue since it's short.
And you can do AU with only 3 costing more than $100.

Peace dollars can be fun any number of ways. All of them will be defined by the fact that well-struck Peace dollars aren't common. You can find them for all your needs but they're like New Orleans Morgans in that regard.

1921 and 1928-P will set you back a bit in any grade; budget $100+ for any sort of worthy example and more by grade. A couple others will be expensive in higher grades. A 65-level, eye-appealing set is available but it'll cost a bunch and take a lot of searching.

A doable collection, but you might end up wanting to spend more than you planned. Really lustrous, well-struck Peace dollars are remarkably appealing especially given their relative rarity.

Oh, yeah. There's VAMs too.

I am collecting the Liberty Walkers Half Dollar. I have most of the less expensive ones now. I am looking at coins from 1921-S through 1916 and I see many in EF condition (which I like) pretty expensive. I recently got a 1928-D and 1929-S in EF condition and I paid $80 and $61 respectively. I see the 1921, 21-d and 21-S will break the bank in EF condition.

You'll find 1921 a difficult issue for anything but Morgans due to their huge mintage. They dominated production at all 3 mints.

I see that 1916 through 1920 are more doable, but still if I get into EF condition it can be expensive. I want to complete my collection but maybe with VF or even F unless I get infusions of cash or infusions of patience. If I can wait I can do it. I do have 14 coins left to collect. I don't know what the rush is but I feel pressure to complete it and get on to next coin. Is this a common affliction among collectors. I aim to stay with one coin at a time until I finish the collection, but those $20 Double Eagles have put a spell on me.

Coin collectors all feel the push. One of the advantages of our hobby is the lessons in patience and business thinking (VF coin now or an AU after I save?) it teaches. Some of us are better at it than others.

It must be a very common affliction because I get stupid crazy urges to start buying once I decide to collect something. I get an irrational fear that if I don't buy right away the price will skyrocket. Weird.
