That coin is mine. I just received it today and listed it on ebay. It's got granular surfaces so I thought it was a metal detecting find that had been cleaned. If people think it's a counterfeit I'll pull it and send it back to the seller.

Haha, I knew that this would happen. Someone posting about a listing of someone here. Has surface issues, can you counterfeit those?

Looks like environmental damage. A good filler. Paul, you have some nice coins up, that 1904 V nick is a beauty!

Kind of reminds me of a spark erosion coin but who would bother for this coin?

Thanks for your comments on my coins.
I'd love to say I'm selling them to buy all sorts of numismatic goodies for myself, but, unfortunately, we had to replace two cars unexpectedly in the last two months (one totaled in an accident and one with 179,000 miles on it that gave up the ghost) so my coin earnings are going to make car payments . . . for the next five years!
YUCK!

The circulation wear/polishing on top of whatever has happened to the surfaces there doesn't help, but given how it looks elsewhere I'm leaning towards authentic but acid/ground damage.
And I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, Paul!
It doesn't matter if it's real or fake at this point anyways... as I just bought it. I hope the money helps. :-)

Steve,
Thanks for buying the coin. Let me know what you find out. Remember, if it is a fake you're welcome to return it.
I don't see car payments as a trouble. At least I'm not driving a coin with 179,000 miles on it any more. That's kind of nice. I was hoping my old 2001 Saturn would last a bit longer, but that's life.
I buy and sell coins for fun and to help out with our giving to our church and our household expenses. The key is to have some fun. If I get to add a coin to my collection now and then that's even better.

I just couldn't tell from the pictures. Was the granulation raised or incuse? I couldn't tell, so that's why I posted it here.

It looks incuse as those something had eaten away some of the metal.

Before reading the "rest of the story", I was going to say it looked authentic to me. I've seen a lot worse Vs!
