What makes a penny look multicolor or shimmer?

Sometimes people light them on fire for fake rainbow toning but real toning comes from sulfur build up on the surface. As light hits the thin sulfur layer it deflects in different colors, causing "toning". Could we get a pic if there is a specific coin you are talking about?

Yeah, with these modern zincs, many have been lit on fire and artificially toned. Have you checked for a WAM yet?

Toning is caused by its surroundings or unnaturally done to them.
Natural:

Causes may vary. How the coins were stored; albums, locations coins come from, mint packaging, placed in paper envelopes for a long time, rolls stored in heat. A lot of way may cause this from happening.
Unnatural:

Not natural colors for toning. Some use other methods to speed this up. But best to know how you can tell them apart.
