Are you referring to the 'dropped letter'?

Hello
I was big on those dollars when they first came out. Buying up all the rolls I could at banks and searching them. I found a few like yours with only one letter added on the whole edge. If there where multiple letters or date #'s and add to that if they were random and upside down from the others it would be an error. Or any combination of them. Only one may suggest probably not a die error. One thing to check though on those extra letters etc. is, if it is incused (punched in) or raised. The norm. is incused on these dollars. If raised it is worth looking into. There are experts on here that could give you more info than myself.

Oh, one more thing ? Is that dollar on the bottom (in your pic.) like that all the way around ? :) I'll give you $10.00 for it :)

Originally, I thought these were dropped letters. They are not. it is the result of one coin smashing into another during any part of the processes at the mint.
Realizing that the edge of the coin has lettering incused, the edge of each and every coin that has the lettered edge, I am told, can act like a die. If the edge of one coin gets pressed into or smashes into another coin, it can leave a raised letter on the edge, ot anyplace else.
It is unfortunately very common and I found several like this.
Sorry to say it really damage and nothing else.
This time though it was a good question as these fool a lot of people:-)
Thanks, Bill

Why does that look like an S mirror imaged from another coin pressed into it? Not sure if it is part of the same denomination or not. But there is an S in PLURIBUS. Can't tell for sure if it is raised from the coin or sunk into the coin. Pressed into the coin would be damage/contact. Raised would be a die issue.
Added: Just realized the letters are sunk into the edge of the coin. So pressing it with another coin would raise the letter. Just the opposite of the die. So bumping two coins together might cause the mark. Sometimes they get a little help from the shop.
