My name is Matt. I've been interested in coins all of my life and have read several books on the subject, the latest, which has been a revelation, "The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins: Secrets of Success: by Q. David Bowers, Kenneth E. Bressett. I've never had the disposable income to collect the coins that have interested me. I'm now in my mid-forties and have the funds to play a little. I'm going to take some time to learn a little more before I take the plunge.
One question I have is how do you buy coins mainly? Do you prefer online auctions, mail order, local dealer, coin shows, etc...
Also any book recommendations would be appreciated. Edited by keaggy220 02/27/2015 6:04 pm

Okay so how I like to buy coins.... (1) sometimes I put ads in the local internet sites that I will buy coin estates... (4) (2) Auctions (1) (3) off the interenet (2) (4) at coin shows or through a dealer (3) The number on the left shows my preference... the number on the right shows the true frequency... I should also not that I enjoy buying coins by all the above stated methods... just I like the "hunt" and find going to a dealer almost too easy to find what you want.. of course you also pay a bit more for the convienence.

Actually I buy most of my coins on ebay and the U.S. Mint...very rarely local coin shops.

We're about the same age, only I've had this addiction they call "coin collecting" for 37 years now! As far as reference books goes, the first one would be the A Guide Book of United States coins. It's also known as "The Red Book." From there it will depend on what you would like to collect!

I might take you up on that Hondo. You a Louis L'Amour fan?
JBUCK - do you happen to participate on a classical music forum?

Haha, I'm not, I'm actually a big baseball fan. Being a DC native, I use hondo because of Frank Howard. That was his nickname and I met him as a youngster. He signed a photo for me and signed it "hondo" among other things. Stared at that on my bedroom wall for years!

I absolutely cannot wait for baseball season to begin. I'm a huge Nats fan. I plan to make several games (or more) this year.
