Are you referring to the circle around the inner edge?

That's neat idk what would cause that bulge around the rim like that. I was thinking a really worn die but it looks well struck. Idk I want to see what the say about the bulge because I've seen stuff similar but not that big or clean looking

@tweak800 I have seen the ring around the pennies too, it looks off center or MAD and is thicker on that side also

Yeah if it's mad it isn't enough to bring a premium. That bulge does look thicker than rest of coin and I don't see signs of a hit on the reverse so I would guess A: extra metal B: gasbubble C: something I can't think of. I'm no expert at all have you weighed it?

no I have not weighed it. it is in really good condition with no cracks, I thought maybe separation due to water damage but nothing no where. I have put it next to my other 1988 pennies and they differ quite a bit. the 8 grabs your attention when looking at it, looks like it slid over the bulge and does not look like any md that I have googled or noticed. I just wondering if this is rare or keepable.

I'm thinking it is caused by a worn die, aka, Die Deterioration. The pros will let you know for sure.

@sudz this is a thick bulge area, not incuse. wouldn't Die Deterioration mean it would be smaller or going away or have a slump... not a thick smooth undamaged area?

Could be a platting problem. Can you push it down with a toothpick?

@silverstackerkid, it is pretty solid, didn't move or leave a mark/indent.

A closer shot would be nice and a different angle to see how much the raised area is. Sometimes light can be deceiving.
