I have been meaning to post this question for sometime and now that the thought has come back to me after being in deep space ---- "If I submit coins to ICCS or CCCS that are graded by another TPG e.g PCG and request that I only want a crack out if it means a better grade if not, return my coin at no cost" is that unreasonable ?

Its like rolling dice with submissions to ICCS for Canadian coins graded by PCG/NGC and USA TPG I would prefer to leave it as is if I have a MS65 that may be downgraded in some cases we are talking thousands of dollars. I don't understand how NGC and PCG who are the top dogs can be off a grade or two compared to ICCS?

From my understanding, ICCS does TECHNICAL grading, where surface appearance is really not taken into account, only dings, digs, scratches etc. US TPG's DO take into account the appearance due to discolorations, carbon spots, etc and they DO count in assigning a grade.

When talking thousands of dollars, why would you chance it?
Does the holder effect the coin? Just asking but when a coin
is already graded why degrade it?

@billfrak, yeah, it comes back to the "buy the coins not the holder issue" but after the past 7 years now in paying for my "education" I still give a lot of respect to the TPG and then to the coin. Ive had on more than one occasion remarks from dealers that are somewhat disconcerting e.g "If that coin was in an ICCS holder it would be worth more " or "PCG/NGC doesn't do a good job of grading Canadian coins" etc..but when I look around at their inventory or check them out online they usually have a plethora of USA graded Canadian coins and asking high prices for same. I don't think I would be around long if I operated my business like this. I have a few younger nephews who have started collecting and top of mind for them and their friends always the grader first then lets have a look at the coin and IMO that is the future for the new breed of collectors.

Someone at the second TPG still has to take the time to examine the coin.
You'll have to pay for that.
And don't forget you'll pay for S&H BOTH ways.

BTW PCG is NOT the same as PCGS.
PCG is NOT a respected TPG.

Easy to answer.
US grading standards are different than Canadian (and most other countries).
In general US grading is ½ to a whole grade higher than the Canadian graders.

REPEAT:
BTW PCG is NOT the same as PCGS.
PCG is NOT a respected TPG.

Thanks for correcting me on PCG vs PCGS. I could live with a fee from them if all I want to know is whether or not they will grade up or down on coin x then-- the ball is back in my corner to decide on next step, which is obvious if I cant get a better grade then leave it as is, what is wrong with that ?

I would consider CCF a TPG that will give out free grades and you can pick the grade you like the most.

Then you may have a better idea what your next step would be.

The whole slab scene no matter what service is just the OPINION of that particular service based on their parameters and fundamentals on that particular day. All of the services grade slightly differently. You could send the same coin in to be graded by PCGS , NGC, ANACS, ICCS, or CCCS and get in theory five different opinions as to the grade. This why it is drummed into people and knowledgeable numismatists already do it..............."BUY the COIN not the HOLDER"
That is why you will still hear the sound of hammering and snapping plastic at coin shows today. If one buys a superb eye appeal piece that is both pretty and well priced , does it really matter what the number on the plastic is? Chances are if you were knowledgeable enough to snap it up, it will appeal to someone down the road when you go to sell. We have all seen superb MS64 coins and ugly MS 65 coins.

Grading from pics is not the same. And some people get right upset if you dont think there coin grades as high as they figure it does. Then there is always poor photography skills..ect. if you dont have good photography skills or your shooting through a layer or two of plastic then you get what you ask for.

Stands true for much more than just coins..IMO

It was only a suggestion as a way to maybe get some results without having to go through the process of submitting the coins and having to pay for shipping. After all you can't beat free and people here will give there opinions for free regardless of how good or bad the pictures are.

Pacificoin , Bang on! "buy the coin , not the holder"
In any situation, a second opinion can't hurt (maybe).
