I agree orfew, there's several I really like and would fit my collecting themes. I really like the way the cardinal is done. I like the train on it's own, to add to my train coins. Of course the moon mask set.
What puts me off is price compared to spot, coupled with the risk of price drop. I set a yearly budget so I'd like to get the best bang for my buck. I guess another huge factor is I already own over 600 Nclt coins. This includes many sets. At what point does a person decide they own enough. Had the RCM priced their 1 Oz coins at $60-$70 per ounce, I'd be a buyer without to much thinking about it. I really like the 3 coin Franklin Carmichael set, however, price drop scarces me off. I know people saw buy what you like. I do this, however I want value too!! When I shop for other things, I decide what I like and then sit back and wait for a sale.
However, regarding coins they used to increase in price by varying amounts. A smart person used to try and find a coin at issue! Recently the smart approach seems to wait to find one at a discount on secondary market. This approach doesn't work 100% either, so this is where guess work comes in, and where I'm feeling more paralyzed in choosing a new release. In this new market I don't know how to be a wise consumer. Again if prices were around $70 an ounce a 10% drop would be acceptable.
Prior to 2013 a new release was seldom found under issue. When you found it, it was considered a real bargain. Where as today, it's taken for granted to find new coins offered from a 20% discount and up. I believe the frequent releases by world mints has caused a glut of coins that the market cannot absorb at current prices. Hence people new to the hobby have a lot of choice and can find many discounted coins. This was rare when I started in the summer of 2012.
