I bought this coin for my best offer to crack out for my type set. The picture on ebay looked pretty good to me.

I received it today and was surprised at how it looks in hand. I am returning it. Here is a close picture. It actually looks worse than the picture.

Mt question is: With all of the gouges/scrapes/scratches shouldn't this have gotten a details grade?

Wow. I can't tell anything from those ebay pics. What I see here may be a bit excessive for VF25, but it's such a small portion of the coin I'm unsure.

Lots of marks but looks like honest wear.
DETAILS are reserved for coins that got damaged beyond the usual wear.

completely. Being a member of EAC we don't use the "details" designation we net grade the coin down one two sometimes three grades depending on the damage.
Another thing to consider where the damage occurs. If it's on the face or in front of the face it's a bigger issue than if the same damage was on one of the stars.
I've seen coins with no obvious damage get a details grade and others that have damage get a clean slab. That's one of the reasons I have problems with the TGPs is their inconsistency.

By all means if you are not happy, send it back. Doesn't look too bad to me.

Copper can be merciless regarding contact marks and minor scratches.
This coin would still be appealing if the rest of the surfaces are fairly blemish free.
But I agree, if you do not like it, better to return it. For a bit more than you paid you can probably find a better one.

I'd return (just my opinion), the coin photo was very dark and tough to see on ebay. They do charge a 10% return fee and don't cover S&H refunds, so only if it makes financial sense to return it, or just resale it yourself, though you will likely take a loss as long as you give an honest representative description and photos.

I'm no fan of NGC grading - especially on copper, but I don't believe this coin deserves a details grade, it's a bit high on the marks and dings but not a details coin, which is reserved for cleaning, damage, corrosion, etc. this appears to be old wear and rough handling only.

doesn't look damaged enough for details grade to me. I would be surprised if the seller would be allowed to charge that 10% fee with ebay policy.

ebay allows restocking fees. They're a dealbreaker for me; I don't patronize sellers who charge them.

I would expect a little better from a VF-25 especially from a TPG. I would send this problem coin back to seller.

Thanks all. I think I understand better now what things are necessary for a "details" grade.

By the way, just noticed that the actual grade on the holder is VF35 not VF25 as mentioned in the listing. Based on your comments I infer that this grade is way too high.

westcoin, I may be missing something but I don't see where this seller is charging a 10% stocking fee.

@yooper

I think you've made a wise desicion in sending it back.

Why buy anything you plan on keeping for a long time and not even like the way it looks in the first place.

Can't do that. We've seen 15% of the coin. I have no idea what grade it is. Yes, the little we can see is a bit skritchy for 35 (you bought a slabbed coin without seeing the grade in the picture?), but all that tells me is the coin might look XF40 with extra marks bringing the grade down.

superdave, Fair enough. I just could not get a good enough picture through the plastic holder to capture the condition of the whole coin. I did originally see that the coin was VF35 when I bought it but one of the early replies to my posting mentioned VF 25 and I didn't remember that the coin was actually labeled
VF 35.

My take away from this experience is not to rely on the slab grading and don't buy anything that doesn't have a clear picture. This advise has been given dozens of times in this forum but I guess I had to experience this to learn :)

Yeah, but I don't listen to me either.

No better lesson. It cost relatively little. Just how good *is* the coin any way? The price wasn't out of line.
