Ok, I know this is suppose to go in the coin photography section where it will get a few responses by photo geeks (like me) but I want more of a "general" type of response.
I want to do some high end photography of some error coins. You have all seen the white, black, and grey backgrounds. I want something different and was looking for ideas.
Say you had a huge detailed poster on your wall of a really cool majorly malformed error coin, would you want the background pure white, black or something else very interesting that Does NOT detract from the coin.
Personally I like white the best but there must be something else.

I recall reading an interesting article on this with lots of photos. It appeared that a shade of gray (or was it blue?) that gave the best background for the truest representation of the coin.

Also, please post or link photos (other than Plain backgrounds) of cool coin photography with excellent backgrounds.
And Here is another Problem that I have run into ....SLABBBED COINS !
I would love to break out 20 some coins and get them re-slabbed but don't want to spend the cash on that. I wonder If I could get a break on re-slabbing say a hundred coins or a ( PCGS corporate donation for a cool project? HMMMMM)!

Hi Errorcoin Your right ,, it belongs in the photography forum ,, but it can ride here for a bit and see what comes of the question . I have a piece of marble tile that I use as a background once in a while ,, it is a Rosa(pink and light purple veining). It gives the background just a little detail without distracting from the coin .  I also tried dark Blue for Silver with fair results .  For copper I like this light grey ,, it seems to have less reflection than white and brings out the color of the coin .  I have also tried a slightly textured black  Dark Blue Gray  Original packaging with the ribbon  Metalman |

I just thought I would add that it may be worth a trip to the tile store ,,check out the ceramics and other tiles ,, there is a myriad of different textures and colors to choose from ,, for backgrounds you could not ask for a bigger selection of options.

Metalman, Thank you for the ideas, I was really thinking of some kinda of rock, but rock and coins don't go together.
I think If I build a little stand for the raw coins, that would work, but the slabbed coins would have to be shopped in, with matching lighting to the background.
errrror
hmmm...... a nice piece or two of floor tile just might work. Now I have to make a trip. Wait, I have some flat rock out in my supplies, now I need to look at them first.

I read that same article, it was something like a 80% gray was the ideal background for coins. The article had all these different types of backgrounds and the dark gray did look the best IMHO.

If I remember correctly it is blur background for copper and gold and black back ground for silver
