I have an Ecuador 10 Centavos 1937 that is 17mm not as listed in Krause (19mm) - anyone know if this a mistake in Krause or if there are two types?

Looks OK - don't have any other 1937 versions, it's next to a 1946 below.

Apparently the 5 centavos of that year were 17mm nickel as well. There are two Heritage auctions of a 17mm "small diameter" 10 centavos in which the coins are identified as a pattern that preceded the official issue of 19mm 10 centavos coins. Perhaps yours is one of these patterns or perhaps there was a batch of business strike 17mm 10 centavos prior to the decision to standardize on 19mm. Regardless, an interesting find. Perhaps an expert on the coins of Ecuador will chime in here.

I would certainly recommend taking it to the next major coin show you attend and asking some experts there.

Nice find!

Thanks for the info - until recently I always thought the 1937 series to have been smaller than the later ones. Given the lack of interest in these it would not surprise me if there was a small business strike issue of these.

It seems that the five centavos from Ecuador got smaller over the years of the early 20th century.
