I went to the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Atlanta today. There was a huge selection of coins & notes, lots of things I had only seen on the net or in books. In general, the dealers were friendly & the selection couldn't have been better. I went with about $700, & fully intended to spend it all. In fact, I had been waiting impatiently for this show for about 3 months.

I can already hear the chant...."Pictures, Pictures, Pictures". Well, except for a lone Mercury dime, an XF with a hint of rainbow toning on the obverse, I came away empty handed. There was a lot of buying/selling going on, most of it between the dealers with the booths & the dealers walking around carrying briefcases & boxes, or dragging carry-on luggage. From what I overheard prices were all based on greysheet bid/ask prices.

Everthing I asked about I was quoted prices that were way above greysheet. Now, I understand that people have to make a living, & that they have expenses, but the markups were ridiculous. I was being quoted prices for raw coins that rivaled what I could buy PCGS slabs for on ebay.

I asked one guy how his prices related to the greysheet. He said he had to make a living, & wanted 15% above ask. Then he shows me the greysheet for the coin I am interested in, & proceeds to quote a price of 65% above the ask. I guess I should have the big red MORON tatoo on my forehead removed.

I may have run into you! I thought the prices were a bit high and I didn't get anything either. However, I was only looking for a few key dates. When I go to big shows I force myself to make a list before hand and stick to it. In the past I have regretted losing focus and buying a bunch of stuff that didn't "fit" into what I was collecting. They may have been good buys but I try to stick to a coin-budget and I had to pass up some stuff at the local coin shop that I really wanted but couldn't justify per my budget.

I wasn't trying to sell anything, but am pretty sure if I was that the prices offered would have been below greysheet. The point I was trying to make was that there seemed to be two levels of pricing, one for dealers & one for others. I'm a hardcore capitalist at heart, so I don't have a problem with people selling at whatever price they like. I also understand that there are differences in wholesale & retail prices, & that people need to make a living. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to buy at retail plus 50%.

To be fair, I didn't price everything, just coins I was interested in. Also, I did see several common date, slabbed, gold coins that were priced at a reasonable premium over melt. I don't know if those prices were left over from before the recent rise in gold bullion.
