Is this pretty common? The pillars of the memorial are visible on the obverse. It's only noticeable at an angle so it was kind of hard to get good pics.

Those are clash marks from the dies striking each other without a planchet and yes, they are common.

The mark on the nose and upper lip your seeing is Machine Doubling. Also common, but more common than the die clash/jailhouse clash. The strong the better for clashes. The reverse may also have clash marks. The reverse clashes are more common than obverse clashes that I have noticed.

Think about that for a second...OK...Time's Up...

The dies clash simultaneously. That means that there are equal numbers of obverse dies and reverse dies created that have clash marks.

It is likely that due to the differences in the designs of the obverse and reverse dies that subsequent strikes after the clash would likely obliterate the details of the clash on the obverse dies sooner than the evidence of the clash on the reverse dies.

So if you mean that you can see the results of die clashes on the reverse more often, that would likely be correct.
