For your perusal is a 1863 Cu-Ni Indian Head cent that I just purchased at a coin show over the weekend. A couple bag marks are found on the chin and cheek.

Next is a 1938-D Buffalo nickel that I purchased at the same show. It has subtle golden blue tone highlights on both sides.
The only distracting mark is a light scratch parallel to LIBERTY

Sorry these coins are outside my knowledge base.
What ever grade they may be the Indian has three distracting Dings cheek chin and E of cents. I see all the diamonds and liberty is complete so its at least EF How am I doing..
The end of the ribbon looks flat so That would rule out the AU range I think.
The buffalo I am guessing at around MS61 assuming the marks are die scratches.
I suspect I am way off on both coins but you did ask

Hello Biokemist6,
The IHC photo isn't very sharp so I'm not able to see fine details of wear and luster. However, I don't rule out a mint state grade. Liberty's cheek isn't discolored so there must be minimal if any wear there, and that's a design high point. The hit on the cheek would limit the grade to MS62 or so. If there is wear I would still grade it AU55 minimum.
The '38-D Buffalo comes well-struck and is easily located in gem BU condition. Your coin might make MS65 if that line in front of the Indian is a die crack. If it's a scratch, it's a big one in a prime focal area and therefore would drop the grade way down.
Very decent coins! Did you negotiate a good deal?

I'll say AU55 on the Indian cent.

Nice looking coins. I'm not an expert on either series, but I think they might both get into the MS range.

I grade the 1863 IHC AU-50. Luster is abundant around the devices, four diamonds are present(one weak) and the tips of the feathers have just begun to wear. On the reverse, the bow and leaves have just a touch of wear. In hand I would probably call it AU-53/55 but the ticks on the cheek and chin hold it back. I paid $50 for it.

I grade the Buffalo MS-62. There is a small scratch by the nose that looks pretty bad in the photos but is more obscured in hand. Luster booms off the sharply struck surfaces. Still, the scratch holds it back so 62 was as high as I could go. I picked this one up for $24, for that price I couldn't go wrong.

Buffalo nickel is definitely gorgeous I think - MS-62/63 and the Cupro-nickel Indian Head I would have said was aUNC
