I've completed my biz strike set. So I decided to attempt the impossible, obtain all the proofs. My goal is be have an example of every Lincoln Cent ever made. Of course, this is excluding some error coins.....I have a few errors, but far from every major example. Just wondering how many of you are into Lincoln proofs. I'm been working very, very hard on a complete set. I'm missing 21 coins, 10 of them are, of course, the matte proofs. Also missing for me are: 1936-1939, 1941, 1942, 1950, 1951, 1970 small, 1981 clear S. At this point, my wallet is running thin! Just getting to this point has been enormously time consuming as, for me, there is no one single source to find all these coins. I've obtained them from at least 20 different sources. I keep justifing my spending by the fact these coins seem to be going up every month. The longer it takes me, the more it's going to cost.

If I were you, I would try to buy as many as I can (especially the older ones) because those will most likely go up on '09.

Yesterday I received a fixed price list from the dealer in Nebraska that I provided a link to in the wanted to buy forum for you a few weeks ago. He has what he calls a choice Type 2 (clear S) 1981 Lincoln proof for 45 plus postage.
No image to see though. I noticed it's not listed in his online store, but you could go to that site and email him about it if interested.

BadThad, I am into collecting the proofs. I have most of them from 1936-42 (missing the 36) and 50-2007 (missing the 50, clear and no "S") I also have 2 matte proofs. One of them I got from a fellow member on here that is very nice (I would say who but I am unsure if he wants people to know). As for buying them I have found that coin shows are the best place to get them. You are right about no single place to get them, I got a couple from ebay, a few from coin stores and the rest from coin shows. I, like you, want an example of every Lincoln. I finished my business set then started a circulated roll collection, then a BU roll collection (that is getting expensive). I started on the proofs then that got expensive. I also started on a RPM and doubled die collection, that got expensive. I am starting to see a pattern forming.... I watch ebay for the 36 and 50 as no one around here has those. I think I might have the 50 later this week. I also watch the matte proofs, I got one by watching it, no one bid on it, then I emailed the seller and gave him an offer and he sold it to me. The only way I will be able to get the matte proofs any time soon is if I win the lottery. I think they are one of the most undervalued Lincolns with the most potential to increase in value (even though they have seen a big jump lately). I wish you luck, it gets harder after each purchase though!

I have all from 1938 to present. I made an album for them from a blank Whitman Classic Album and blank pages. Used their Gold type press on letters/numbers under each. Not sure if I'm even going to try for the earlier dates but would like the 36 and 37. Don't see them at coin shows and that's the only place I buy coins. I had so many of some of the later dates I started a secondary section after the main section of that Album.

Badthad, I am trying to same thing your doing aslong with buying the Double die coins for my set. I have the 1972 double die so far. My first one so far . I got luckey and paid 180 bucks on ebay for the 1950 thru 1958 proof coins from one man on ebay. I was amazed I found them at that price . I still need the 81 type 2 and 1970 small date to finish the set. The 1909 thru 1942 proofs are very expensive. I need those for my collection also. Boy it expensive . On ebay serval monlths ago there was man selling an intire set with all matte proofs minus the 1909 v.b.d. proof coin. His had it all and he was asking 65000 usa dollars for intire set with his roll set. I thought 65000 was way to much money for his penny set. This man collected since he little kid. I did try to buy this set of his but he got upset when I wanted trade him an 1960 cadillac eldorado convertible as even swap that worth over 75k to 150k when restored. The car needs restored I tryed to trade him. I guess he was not an old classic car guy and refused it. He never sold his set and its never been on ebay since. Reason is set never sold I was thinking all the coins not in slabs or broken out of slabs and his set had an fake 1955 double die. His matte proofs could be fake since they were not slabed by the magor grading company and so on. He even said his 1955 d/d was an fake coin in auction. On ebay for what I have seen those matte proofs cost maybe 1000 dollar each or more if slabed. Dont buy them unless they are in pcgs or anacs holdors since they can be faked very easy for what I have heard. So for me to be safe side . I will onley buy those double dies, matte proofs in Pgcs slabs for my collection. Its to much money to worry about. My advice to you and me since we are trying build the same set. Take our time and shop around for next serval years. Like they said before Rome was not built in one day. My set will take maybe serval years to build it . Reason I need safe up on each matte proof and find one at time in its finished. Chevrolet454ss

Forgot to mention this in my previous post, but I'm collecting 50-65 (Need 50-55). Once that's done, I'm going to go backwards and work my way down.

chevy,
I almost bought that set you were talking about, it had a complete roll set, top 100 Lincoln varieties, matte proofs etc... I keep telling myself that it is better that I am building my set piece by piece, but it sure would have been nice to have that set.

Chrsb,
I know that set was very expensive and nice. I was amazed he built it like he did. I am trying build the same set like he had but at time I could not afford the 65000 price tag. Its going take me years to build an set like that one coin at an time intill its finished serval years later. The amazing thing is I never seen another set like his again for sure. He did an good job and worked for years to build it.

I am currently putting together the Dansco Lincoln Memorial set and have all coins except 18 proofs. Most of the proofs I have gotten from one seller on ebay. I have 4 coming from him this week. Once this set is completed, then I will work on finishing my Wheat collection

I hope to buy my 1st matte proof this weekend in Tucson, if there are any nice ones. I also want to complete every Lincoln Cent 09-58. Then, maybe I'll think about the Memorials.

My sig line says it all .
I have been 15 years on my proof Lincoln set with about 15 more years to go should I live so long !
I don't get in a hurry all the coins must have certian attributes or they don't make the cut .
all proofs are not created equally !

I am actually working on getting a set from 1950-2007 but all with cameos. I dont do certified coins so I am looking for raw ones I have got everything from 1958 up but the earlier ones are not only tough to find that not only just dont have fingerprints or spots on them but finding a cameo to is a very tough search. Fun tho nonetheless. I agree on the justification as they do go up in value almost daily and by 2009 I think a full set of memorial bus strikes alone will be 50+ easily but this is just one collectors opinion so dont take that to the bank. I collect the matte proofs from 1909 to 1916. I have at least one example of each one save the VDB. I guess they are expensive but when you consider the cost against the miniscule mintages then they seem reasonable.

So far I've purchased all my proof cents from coin shows. Some years ago a dealer had a bunch of them and told me this was his last day selling and just wanted to get rid of as much as possible. Sounded like a typical flea market routine. But he did sell me most of the proofs I now have for about half of what I expected. Then he said if I take more he would even drop the prices more so I took lots more. Now have many duplicate proofs but I just keep adding pages to the album. Not one of the older matt proofs yet. Waiting for a similar story at a coin show.
