Just interested in folks' evaluation of this. I presume the peripheral toning can be put down to reaction with the holder. Also, what do you think of the pricing?

If it really is an MS-65, then it's a splendid deal, the toning is really nice to boot. It's also redfield, so that adds to the value I guess.
I could see it as an easy 64, don't know if it will stretch to 65 or not.

I thought that ungraded coins couldn't be listed over a certain price unless they were graded my certain TPGs?

If any of this coin's present or past owners had reason to believe that this coin would grade MS65 at one of the major TPG grading companies it would have been busted out of the Redfield holder a long time ago.

Most likely the coin would grade 63 with an outside chance at 64 if graded late Friday afternoon with the grading finalizer trying to get away for a date with his new girlfriend!

Most of the Redfield dollars I've seen over the years fall into the 62 to 64 real world grades. That "65" on the Paramount holder is wishful thinking .....for the most part.

I was aware that the "grade" that appears on these Redfield slabbed specimens may well not conform to more modern (and rigorous) criteria.

Bertensgrad makes a good point, although I'd be comfortable with ebay exempting an item like this in its original historic holder.

I'd imagine through the years quite a few of the Redfield coins were removed from these holders.

Are those parallel marks on the cheek the result of being run through a coin counter?

how would you describe the strike?

Could well be, as that was one of the mistakes made in handling the hoard, and the 1893-CC was among those issues specifically noted to have been so marred. It suggests that if this example was submitted, it might come back "bodybagged" or with a "details" annotation for mechanical damage. In any case, there's significant risk, which makes the price all that much more daunting.
