Well I was coin-crazy enough to drive up to a show in Portland, Maine, this morning. It paid off because I brought back my first coin issued by Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth of England!

Alas, I am dreadfully photographically challenged. I have a new camera aging gracefully in its box for a month now. So please bear with me - since several of you will really appreciate an old historically important English coin - I just wanted to quickly post these (dreadful) scans of my new silver 6d to share my enthusiasm!

Lovely example of "breeches money".

Thanks everyone! It is really fantastic to have a place to show off a coin like this one to true collectors who appreciate it! Even at the coin show, I doubt more than a few people other than the seller and the buyer (me) would know what it was and the history behind it. Just about everyone around here is highly focused on American coins. Also the better European coins have pretty much disappeared (sold back to Europe, most likely, due to the weak dollar). Most dealers at coin shows give me a strange look when I ask if they have any silver coins struck before 1700.

That is a nice sixpence. They can be pricey, but nowhere near what the Massachusetts pieces coined at the same time bring. If the Commonwealth interests you, you might also enjoy the early French Republican coins, with their distinctive Dupre designs and oddball year designations.
