This one is graded by PCGS but was wondering what you all thought the grade should be. This coin is graded DMPL (not sure I agree with that designation because I have some graded PL that has more mirrors than this coin). Before SeatedNut can jump in here and tell everyone what VAM this is I can actually beat him to it this time, it is a VAM-81 (Ha Ha). Anyway I think they may have missed the grade by a little but I think they were very generous with the DMPL designation, what do you people think it should be graded (not including the DMPL)

Bryan,

Now that you've taken all the fun out of the VAM attribution ...

I would say they gave it a 63. The breast feathers seem to lack the detail to go higher. That's the only thing I can see on this one that keeps it from a 65. BTW if you are getting rid of it

Assuming the scratches are on the holder on the obverse, I would say a solid 64. Like SeatedNut, I don't think it's far from 65. I don't think the breast feathers would make a huge difference would they? Has a grading service actually said "lack of detail/depth kept this from going higher" to someone before?

If those marks are not on the holder but in fact on the cheek and in the field in front of the nose, instant 63 I think.

PCGS probably gave it a 63. I'm assuming that the chatter on the cheek is actually breaks in the luster. I think it should be at least a 64, possibly higher if I had the coin in hand. The reverse is beautiful.

I will go a little higher and say MS-65. There is frost everywhere on this coin and the cheek is the only real break. The breast feathers keep it from going higher. I do agree that DMPL is high but it is definitely PL. Very nice coin. If it came back less than an MS-64 I would be surprised.

It looks like an MS64.

you all were right on with what PCGS gave it. I have some 64's with more marks than this coin shows but what do I know about grading

MS63 dmpl is what I would have given her as well. The stuff on the cheek is the grade limiting factor on this one, and precludes a higher grade regardless of lack of other hits.
I once owned an 1880-O that had a very fine scratch on the cheek like this one (you had to tilt the coin to see it) yet was otherwise so clean it basically screamed ms65. It was also graded ms63 dmpl by pcgs. I showed the coin along with an ms64dmpl from the same date to David Hall from pcgs at one of the Long Beach shows (the 63 had far superior eye appeal than the 64) and he immediatley picked up the scratch and said that was the grade limiter.
A very lovely coin, Bryan!
