Bought my second Castile & Leon coin today, and it's much better condition than my first one.
Mediaeval-Spain
Castile and Leon were two kingdoms in what is now north-central Spain, and would eventually evolve into the core of the modern nation of Spain. This is a base-silver "penny" (also known as a dinero, blanca or cornado) of King Alfonso XI, who ruled from 1312 to 1355.

Most of the legend is illegible, there's a few corrosion patches and the poor thing's got a nasty hole torn through the thin planchet. As you can perhaps imagine, my other Castile & Leon coin isn't terriblyt photogenic!

Pretty big, for a medieval penny: 19mm.

Ahhh....building castles in Spain, as the French say. Nice and interesting coin, bearing the predecessor of the castle seen on the later shields.
