Still learning from all of you, is there a special name for this or just a old faded penny?

We will need a closer image of the affected area. And where the copper appears to have stopped. You are thinking of a partial plated cent.

The devices should be strong on the unplated area. It looks weak in that area. So I'm thinking acid painted onto it.

I would agree that this is most likely due to environmental wear or being in an acid etc.

Note the grainy affect on the copper plated areas of the coin? That was a problem with the rinse technique they were using on they were using then. It was a real problem early on with the Zincolns. But note, the gray area on your coin. You still see it there under "GOD". So something affected the plating and die not totally remove what they were trying to make it look like. Note on the unplated planchet above in my image, the surface shows no rinse problems. (sometimes referred to as "orange rind".) So your coin was altered from what I can see.
