In 19th century coins, say in the $50 range, would you experienced collectors prefer a mid grade (F) in original condition or a higher grade (VF) but cleaned for the same price. (assuming that the retail value for both are the same)

for my actual, serious collection...the F in orig. shape, for a cheap representative of the type so I can at least have one I would take the deails coin for the extra detail left on the coin BUT ONLY IF THE COIN IS ATTRACTIVE.
Feel free to call me Will.

I always prefer original coins over cleaned coins regardless of the date or grade.

Personally, it all depends on the individual coin. Based on leftover eye-appeal, rarity and harshness of the cleaning and price, I could choose either the F or VF. In the past, I have chosen cleaned coins over original surface coins. For example, last year I bought an 1875-S 20 Cent in AU, slightly cleaned for $180, the same coin would've cost me $400 problem free. The cleaning wasn't too harsh, the overall eye-appeal and luster remained and personally it's my opinion that some coins that looks beautiful in AU and MS grade don't look very good in worn grades (design too worn to appreciate the beauty fully). It really all depends on the coin for me.

Although based on my experience with both buying and selling, most collectors, atleast those who are serious and know the ropes will take the problem-free lower grade over the higher grade.

A lot of the time with key-dates and rare coins, buying high grade jist isn't an option, in this case, I definitely consider the cleaned EF over the original surface VF. Of course, this means I am also a lot more picky with what I buy. I would never buy a damaged, ex:jewlery, soldered, holed or harshly cleaned coin as there would be no appeal left in it for me.

Just my Two Cents.

999fine,to CCF. This is an interesting question.
In the $50 range for a 19th century coin with a F grade original would be a great buy. To buy a higher graded coin with detail would depend on a number of factors.
There are a number of CCF members who know then me. Let them chime in.

First let me say that I don't like cleaned coins PERIOD !!
so yes I would take the fine original coin always before
a VF or EF cleaned coin of the 19th century. cleaned coins give me a headache and stomach ache at the same time.
