For an awkward first post, I have a weird request. That is to find a home for this coin by outbidding me.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/26181129121...parms=gh1g=I261811291213.N5.S2.M1478

I probably should explain. I've been trying to get a 2 cent piece that's still in a recognizable condition for less than $15.00. Being a college student, I've limited my budget on coins.

I managed to get a 1865 2 cent piece today, snatching one up for $8.50 in a last minute bid. However I had previously made a max bid of $10.00 on the coin linked in this post the night before when it was still in the $3 range.

With a day left there's a good chance I might get outbid and not have to spend money on two coins when I wanted one example (especially on a limited budget). Still, I'd like to make it certain that I lose this one so I can put the money towards other coins and exonumia I've been scouting for.

It's an odd request, but I may as well put my line in the water.

Just email the seller of the second coin and ask him to cancel your bid.

Thanks. I'm fairly new to bidding on ebay so I wasn't sure if you could cancel on bids or not.

I think you may also cancel your own bid. Not suggested to do it too often, but we all make mistakes. I've done it once or twice. Just google retracting a bid.

I looked into bid retraction, it's only allowed in special cases where a person accidentally bid the wrong amount ($950 when they meant to bid $9.50) or if the seller is unavailable for a lengthy amount of time. I have contacted the seller to cancel my bid and I hope that he or she accepts my cancellation request in the next 20 hours.

In the meantime, anyone who is interested in the item is free to bid.

That dosent mean the seller won't do it for you... JUST ASK HIM... He most likely WILL do it rather than chance having a non paying bidder... -"Closed mouths never get fed"

I messaged him last night and got a response. He is going to wait to cancel my bid to see if some other bidders come in. So far there's about 10 hours and 46 minutes left on the auction.

They use those examples because ebay doesn't want friends of the seller driving up the bid & retracting at the last minute to bait another buyer or drive up the final price...which is why it sounds like the seller is waiting to cancel your current bid.

Just so your aware, you may not be able to retract a bid once the auction is in the final 12 hours.

Yes but if the seller balks you have his message saying he would cancel for ebay. Don't worry, a seller is not going to stir an issue for pennies... pun most definitely intended!

But that doesn't prevent you from retracting your bid for whatever reason and just not rebidding. I've done that before, it's been a few years, but it's better than buyer's remorse.

Otherwise, just ask the seller to cancel the item for some reason, or if it's within the first hour (I believe) once it's won, you can go through ebay to cancel the item and forgo contacting the seller directly. There truly is nothing forcing you to actually pay for the item once won.
