I see these a lot in low grades, often with problems, I never see them like this outside major auction catalogs. I can't believe my luck in finding an example this original with hardly any rub from circulation. It was a good deal too. It's since gone to NGC and now resides in an MS62 slab. I haven't been able to find much information on the relative rarity of the Besançon mint for this series though. Surfaces are glossy brown and riddled with die cracks. This die was on its last legs that's for sure. A couple traces of mint red in protected areas. Edited by EFLargeCents 03/20/2015 09:09 am

These are usually found in F-VF. One like that is well worth around $80 bucks.

Looks like someone with the discerning Large Cent/EAC eye has developed wanderlust and is dabbling on the darkside!
Nice piece.

Thanks for all the comments! US auction catalogs have these selling around $300 in this condition, but rarely do they show up. These are pretty scarce in the US.

One of my interests is French coinage from 1790-1830. I like US coins too, but the pricing is orders of magnitude higher. A high grade Dupre decime sells for hundreds of dollars while a similar grade US 1794 flowing hair cent based on a Dupre design sells for $10,000 or more. Coins of equal beauty IMO with the high grade French copper decime likely much scarcer than the cent.
