I have no problem with APMEX; everybody here seems to respect them as a business. But, um, no. I'm not givin' you $90 for an AU 1896 because it has a strikethrough. Think about this, APMEX. If they're common enough for you to find and sell them commercially, how rare are they?

My problem with APMEX is the follow disclaimer they have on their coin offerings: Quote: This photograph illustrates the quality of the coin(s) you will receive, not the exact item. Coin(s) will not have toning unless otherwise noted. While they are a reputable company, they deal in coins as bullion NOT numismatic items, they sell whatever they have in stock at the moment and don't hide the fact what you see is not necessarily what will get when you order from them. Bottom line if you want to buy coins there are hundreds of legitimate dealers that post great photos of the actual coin that they are selling, not a generic stock photo of a similar coin for sale.

Quote: Do you have any examples of those dealers, westcoin? The best answer for that is "all of them." Offering individual coins with generic images is offensive, and dealers who do that don't last long. A place like APMEX does not care what each individual coin looks like, and neither do their customers because they aren't coin collectors. They're metals investors. Errors are a kinda silly bulk investment, and strikethroughs especially silly.

Yup, APMEX for bullion, fine. Problem is, they are trying to sell a raw Morgan dollar like their bullion products. That coin might be worth $40-50. Common date, common error.

Stay away....not good purchases at $100. These are worth as much as any other decent condition coin for the date. Strike throughs are common enough to find for the morgan series. Keep your eyes open in ebay and therrs a good shot you find one for a much better price.

Since we are on CCF start with other members here on the CCF auction forums, link at top, ebay (always check the feedback), local coin shops, any of the really good dealers are advertisers in many top publications like The Numismatist, Coin World, Numismatic News, etc. A few of my favorite dealers are: G. Tiso, Jack Beymer, Don Bonser, Heritage, David Lawrence, Great Collections, Stack's/Bowers, Legend, Silvertowne (in person at major coin shows), Goldberg Auctions, Kagin's, Alhambra Rare Coins, Nevada Coin Mart, Bozarth Rare Coins, Bob Paul Rare Coins, Frisco Mint, Eagle Eye Coins/Rick Snow, Brian Greer, John Dirnbauer, Chris McCawley, PQ Dollars, Brian Greer, The Penny Lady (Charmy Harker), Rich Ulrich, VAMs & More, Reeded Edge. That list should satisfy most coin buyers with enough material found amongst those dealers to build just about any type of set you are interested in.
