I feel like I see a good deal of chatter about them. What have I missed and why or why not should I pull them aside.
Thanks in advance!

2009 coins were low mintage, by modern standards at least.

They also have a lot of errors, apparently.

Since no one else mentioned it, and I always assume ignorance (at the very least for the lurkers)...
There were four different reverse designs that year.

There is a lot of minot DD's for this date, plus low mitages! The 2009 Presidancy from 'Philly still escapes me after over $500 in boxes of pennies

Oh, there is also the fact that the mint and proof set cents are bronze (95% copper). There is always a good chance of them getting into the wild.

Any links for variations (images of differences) that someone could share? Or just a good overall site I could check out. Thanks for the tons of quick replies. Now I just need to find a few.

Hold on to 1st day release coins. You're grandchildren will appreciate it. I know I have about 20 rolls left. :)
Not much value for us in circulated condition.

I have went through at least 10 boxes and could never find AU/BU presidency cents. I ended up breaking down and buying some original bank rolls on ebay at a pretty steep premium the other day. Spent $39 on the following rolls.. 1 P-mint Birthplace 1 D-mint Birthplace 1 P-mint Formative 1 D-mint Formative 2 P-mint Professional 1 D-mint Professional 2 P-mint Presidency 3 D-mint Presidency 12 rolls in total. Pretty steep at over 6x face value but I didn't want to risk it.. both P and D mints of the presidency had less than 200 million a piece (to put in perspective most other years have atleast 1 billion with some being up to around 8 billion). It might take 50 years but I think these will be fairly valuable in the future. As oober said, my grandchildren will hopefully appreciate it. If anyone knows of a cheaper place to get presidency BU rolls let me know :)

I want to make sure that I have this straight. The cents in the mint sets are bronze and the cents actually minted for circulation are zinc?

It's a case of low mintage -> hoarding -> artificial rarity -> inflated prices -> they will never circulate freely. Despite a total mintage of over 2 billion, the public announcement that 2009 production figures would be low, plus the novelty of the first new design since 1959 led to huge demand for these coins. Since they arrived at their various channels by the box (which could be snatched up for a mere $25 each) very few ever made it to circulation. The heyday was mid-2009 when ebay was flooded with boxes going for $350+ each, often with dozens of bids. Most people who own boxes refuse to acknowledge that they are no longer worth $350, let alone $30-50 which is closer to the fair market price. And yes, the coins (especially LP-2) are a hotbed for doubled dies. Coppercoins.com lists over 100 for that year, 80+ of which are LP2. As for their rarity in circulation, I'll admit that I've done my part in contributing to the problem:

Man wish I had been collecting in 2009 so I could have snagged up a few boxes :)
Nice little collection Finn!

I went through my sets as I'm selling a lot of my US Mint stuff at the moment (click the link just above my post if you're interest - no reserve auctions) and noticed that the Proof Bicentennial Pennies have toned quite a bit.
Does anyone know why that is? Did they have a different composition, or were they minted differently. No other penny has toned that bad/well, incl. those minted in 1999 (earliest I have).

Was the set opened in the past? They did make bronze proofs in 2009, but 6 years is an awfully short time for toning to appear.
