I found this in my loose change. I never saw anything like this before. Can anyone comment?

To CCF! Wow, you got that in change?! NICE! This is a mint error, and I would say this is a nice off center strike, with a date! Great find, might be worth some $$ if you send it in to a TPG

What surprises me, it must have been circulating for some time, and nobody kept it, except for me. I would like to have it appraised, but I have no idea where to go.

Welcome to Coin Community, res18fgl. I think we could come up with a pretty clear picture of your coin between the massed experience of the Forum. An off-center strike, looking like only the obverse "hammer"die was out of alignment. I'm guessing the reverse looks normal but weak where there's no obverse? Is there a mint mark? These are dramatic and interesting errors carrying a substantial added value. They're not as uncommon as one might think, though, with Jeffersons. Yours has the cachet of a clear date, which helps value as well. All the same, this is more a $50-75 error than a mortgage payoff. Chances are it was in a collection until just recently when it was stolen (maybe by the kid in the house) and spent.

Nice find! I'd love to find one of these. Good to know there is hope for finding one in circulation, even a year 1976! Few little scratches but most of the detail is there and not worn : ) Do you mind posting the reverse?

to CCF. It should have a decent value for being a dated un-centered strike and a bit more of a value for being a 1976 IMHO. John1

Very nice, thanks for posting the other side of the coin! Looks like it's still got it's steps too with a lot of details; good signs it hasn't been circulating much. Can't imagine the cashier didn't notice and grab it for herself!
