I've been hoping to pick up a Series 1923 $5 "Porthole" Silver Certificate for my currency type set album for a few years now, but haven't been able to find one that wasn't either in horrible condition (major tears, pieces missing, etc.) or else just way too expensive. I set a maximum budget of $1000, but the only ones I've seen at coin shows were high grade examples costing $7000-15000. Well, I happened to be browsing ebay last night and came across what seemed like a decent enough example for $600. Yes, it has visible creases, some minor staining and edge tears, but it appears to be all there and similar in grade to many other of the more "exotic" notes I have in my collection (again, I'm trying to put together a reasonably affordable type set and not buying for investment purposes). I don't have the note in hand yet, but the seller pics were nice and clear and I'm pretty sure I won't be in for any surprises when I actually do get it: Now, all I need to do is find a decent Series 1896 $5 "Educational" Silver Certificate that I can afford... For the sake of comparison, by the way, here is my Series 1899 $2 "Mini Porthole" Silver Certificate in similar condition:

Those are great notes. Hopefully no surprises when you receive the porthole!

Congrats on an excellent acquisition! One of my favorite designs and probably the favorite note in my collection. Here is mine that I happened to stumble upon in my LCS. It was one of those "buy it when you see it" moments. Looking for a "Pokerchip" yet?

nice note I am thinking your collection is looking really good, this should be a nice addition. I think you got it at a good price. CDN green sheet has it priced at VG bid $480 ask $525 Fine bid $640 ask $700 We have a customer at a LCS keeps asking for a mini port hole. I can see why, I really like that note.

Yeah, I had a feeling you'd appreciate this one, what with it being in your signature line and everything... I'd love a Series 1923 Legal Tender Note ("Pokerchip") and even have it on my official list of stuff to buy someday, but I don't see it happening any time soon. Maybe about the same time I decide to buy a "Technicolor" note...

Congrats on the new porthole, Barryg! I bet your excited to get it in hand. These types of notes are so expensive, most of us gotta go for them in lower grades, but just think of the history it has! So many secrets and untold tales of mystery! I'm jealous!

$600 sounds reasonable for that condition. Definitely a favorite amongst many, hope it looks very nice in person!

Just wanted to provide an update on this. I received the $5 Porthole note in the mail today and it actually looks better in hand than it looked online. I have updated the pictures in the original post with ones I took myself.
In addition, I happened to visit a LCS today and picked up a much nicer replacement for my $2 "Mini" Porthole, and those pictures have been updated as well. I can't edit my original post, but my comment about my $2 note being in the same condition as the new $5 note no longer applies, since the $2 note is in VERY nice condition.

It's always nice to see an online purchase that looks better than what you were expecting and that $2 looks really nice as well. Looks like a solid VF-XF note.

Nice pickup. Probably a good idea to get it into a TPG slab.

Nah, I don't like slabbing my paper money. Doesn't fit in the album...
