I love rescuing junk bin coins. I see it as doing my part to keeping them out of the melting bin. I found these two at my LCS. The Morgan I picked up for $21. A good soak in acetone for a few hours makes a world of difference. It made my day to spot a SLQ in the just bin. Seeing the arrows, made it even better! It went into my 7070 as a hole filler. Opinions? Morgan - before soak: Moragan - after soak: SLQ:

I hate to spoil your morning but both coins are damaged in my opinion.

^ I think he's aware the coins are damaged, as he said he "rescued them from the junk bin". OP, I always have a good time going through the junk bins too, I've actually found some really cool coins in them before, even hard to find dates. I think a lot of times they just see an ugly coin and throw it in the junk bin and don't even look into it.

Just because a classic coin is damaged in some way it doesn't deserve to be melted. Nice save! Also, you may want to try soaking that Morgan for a full day in acetone. It's certainly an improvement over where it started but there may be more to go.

I would have bought the Morgan too. Easy decision. I don't even like to think of Morgans being melted down.

This was my all-time greatest junk bin rescue! It was at a coin shop in London. There was a big tray outside the shop with lots of worn pre-decimal pennies for 3p each. I had a quick glance and spotted this one: It was over 20 years ago, but even then an 1869 penny in any condition was well worth having! I expect the dealer had bought a load of old pennies and just tossed them into his junk box without checking the dates!

Quote: I hate to spoil your morning but both coins are damaged in my opinion. AND that is why they were there. All in all, still great coins.

I'd quickly go broke trying to rescue all the low grade and damaged Morgan (and Peace) dollars that pass through my local sources at or around that price.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I guess I am a junk binaholic. I saw the Morgan and thought, I'll take a chance and see what acetone will do. I let the Morgan soak until this morning. It gave up alittle more, but not much. When I spotted the Seated quarter arrows. I held it up and said to the dealer, "This just made my day." He had thought I had cherry picked something valuable. "Oh that belongs in there" was his response. My thrill comes from finding the unexpected, not necessarily valuable. I guess this is why I also enjoy CRH so much.
