I won this coin in a auction. The only information the seller had was ancient coin. I believe it is Pertinax but I know his coins are scarce only 87 days in power before being killed. I only have these pictures since I haven't received the coin yet . Also no size or weight was given so I took a chance on getting a rare coin for a good price. I have not been able to find him wearing this type of crown only a wreath.I Any ideas? thanks Joseph

It sure looks like him. I'd say yes. Nice find.

I wont have the coin for a couple of weeks but I hope I can clean it some more. The seller doesn't specialize in ancients so it was not attributed but it still wasn't as cheap I thought 87 GPB, but for a Pertinax I am happy

I think that you can clean some deposits of the reverse, clearing the type. The reverse type is liberalitas (At least I think so)

I saw this go but didnt bid - I suspect it may be a cast fake. Its mushy, pitted and has a filled crack (another sign of casting).

Yes, maybe a cast copy. But it´s necessary to see the coin "on hand" to be sure. Sorry

It is hard to tell from the picture if it is a fake I also saw the pitting but it looks like some heavy patina The hard red type so hopefully it is real. If worst comes to worst the seller will accept returns

Here are enhanced images. The pitting is a concern especially the large pits which could be caused from casting. There is also quite a bit of surface corrosion this can be natural or faked. I'm leaning towards this coin being OK though.

It looks good to me. The quality of the bust seems realistic and the overall condition of the coin resembles greatly this example of a Pertinax dupondius in my collection. Would be investing to weigh it when you get it in hand - my example weighs ca. 9,8 grams if I recall. Interestingly, Pertinax asse and dupondi seems to be much scarcer than sestertii. Good find!
