There seems to be many varieties of this coin minted which isn't helping me nail down a RIC number, Obverse - helmeted bust Reverse - Horse galloping, rider raising hand, star below Weight - 9.33 Size 30mm I have found the reverse but with a different bust and vice versa. Just wondering if you can help me with a RIC number ? TIA

I have looked through wildwinds Pish, because that 1 has a lower hand holding spear I dismissed it. Are you saying that mine is just a variety of this ?

Coins of Koinon Macedonia were issued under a few Roman emperors. I have one which has Alexander on the reverse from the time of Elagabalus. Echizento gave me the reference. http://www.tantaluscoins.com/coins/109329.phpWhat makes you think that this is Gordian III?

This isn't a Roman Imperial Coin so it would not have a RIC number, as a Roman Provincial coin you would have to check other sources. I haven't been able to find an exact match to your coin, so more sources would have to be checked, Moushmov, Varbanov for example. While phish's reference is close I think it could be a variation of the same coin you should probably check further before marking it as such.

Hi Pish It was the 1st emperor I found with this reverse which may well be completely wrong. Not knowing who it was minted under I simply stuck with a name I was fairly confident of it being from. I certainly don't mind being corrected Hi Echizento Many thx for your efforts, I knew it didn't have a RIC number due to it being provincial but wasn't sure what else to ask for. I have done a search through the coins of all the other emperors and still no match but the obv/rev appear on other coins but not together. The reverse of " hand raised " appears on a lot of Denari from Gordian III however most have the rider holding a spear. I will dig deeper and get back to you asap. Thx to both of you.

Gee, I had forgotten about that thread and it wasn't all that long ago. Guess my old age is showing. Anyway, now that I'm fully awake try Gordian III AMNG 773 var, I think that's a match to your coin. Go to http://www.acsearch.info/ and use Coinon as a reference and you should find an example.

when I read the reverse exactly with my old eyes it is SNGCop1363 cf. Koinon of Mecedon , AE26 first half of the 3rd century AD. obv: ALEXANDROY : head of Alexander III right rev : KOINON MAKEDONON B NEOKORON: horseman charging right ,mantle waving behind , beneath dog running right. See wildwinds.albert

Thanks Pish & Sorry I missed the thread on your coin, very nice by the way Echizento your a star, yes it is a match I have a strange couple of Byzantine types for you that I will post next Albert, the legend is 100% correct but it is definitely a star under the horse not a dog. I can bag it & tag it now. Many thx for your efforts
