To make more informed collecting decisions, I pose this question with the help of a visual aid as seen below.

Understanding-Canadian-Coin-Mintages

Let's start with the 1996 toonie. Am I correct to assume that mintage number shown (375,483,000) is across all versions of the '96 coin listed for Circulation, PL, Specimen, and Proofs as I have underlined? I felt it a wise choice to have an understanding of this before I start spending money. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure but, I believe that those would be the total mintages.

Although it is only in rare cases where the # of non-circulation coins is significant compared to the # of circulation. For example, out of that 375,483,000 only 120,217 or 0.03% made it into the BU (MS NC) sets which are the most common ones issued. I would say a rough guess would be 0.1% of the total are non-circulation.

I am just starting to rebuild my collection. The year before last I was in a bad place financially so I had to sell. It is a daunting task ahead of me. Before I mostly had PL coins from the sets. However since then, I am taking a liking to specimen coins. But all in all, I think my collection my just end up being mixed between the different finishes. Guess it really depends what I can find.
