I just bought some coins for my 7070 on ebay. One was a beautiful Susan B Anthony Proof. Unfortunately, it has a little smudge on it. I also got a beautiful BU Silver Eagle. Unfortunately, it has a couple tiny water spots.

Thinking of cleaning with Acetone soaked cotton swabs. Opinions?

Do not touch the coin with anything,, if acetone does not remove it by simply soaking the coin then rubbing will not help, cotton will scratch the mirrored surfaces of the proof and Mint state coins alike .

and I have found nothing that removes the spots from the ASE's .

PS. I have seen clad proof coins haze from acetone ,,I only use it when absolutely necessisary on noble metals . gold ,silver and platinum.

Thanks Metalman. And I thought acetone was supposed to be totally neutral!

I've seen pics of Acetone soaked cotton swabs cleaning PVC, etc. from coins in the book "Coin Collecting For Dummies," by Ron Guth, President of Coinfacts.com, so I thought it might be OK.

There can be anything from dust particles to just the cotton itself that can leave marks on the mirror finish of a proof coin and even a business strike coin (but may be easier to see without magnification on the proof) and that is why it was said to just soak the coins instead of wiping them with any foreign material like cotton or a rag soaked with acetone. I have seen commercials where they dip their one cent coins in their product to make them shiny again but I sure wouldn't do it to any of my coins

Did you try d-limonene? Engine starter fluid may also work (diethyl ether).

do not put ether on your coins if you want to sale them later. I have never heard of that but I do know that ether is not pure and will leave you coin looking like an old carburetor

I don't know about those other things, but I did try Palmolive, "PXY", on some cents that had been wrapped with scotch tapem and then tubes, (paper). They came out all sticky, and I decided to try and clean themIt is supposed to be Phospate free, and generally neutral. The coins were placed in a SS strainer, and placed in hot water, with a couple drops of the "soap" I stirred the coins gently with a wooden spoon handle, for a couple minutes, and then drained in cold water. The coins are very clean, and no change in appearance noted. The coins were a couple rolls of 60' ,70's, and a few 80's. Lots of "P"'s, and generally pretty good shape. Mist have been stashed. My vault teller told me about them, and I took them

It can leave spots on the metal from residue. Water and soap can do the same to many a coin depending on what is in the soap and water. Proofs seem to scratch just by looking at them. If a coin is being damaged and is of value, send it to a professional coin cleaning/restoration service. Them fellas tend to know a thing or two. Self cleaning will probably ruin more of your coins than improve them. I read many moons ago that lasers are also used to remove some types of damaging debris. Hope this helps. G.
